2011-2012 NHL Thread

Please - for the love of all that is Holy Boston...please beat the crap
outta Vancouver on Saturday.

NB. I live in Vancouver. Feel my pain.

This Boston/Vancouver game is getting crazy already, less then 4 mins in and there was a brawl on the ice already, 1 actual fight, tons of penalties, Canucks with the 5 on 3 PP now.

Link if you want to watch:http://www.firstrow.tv/watch/100739/2/watch-vancouver-canucks-vs-boston-bruins.html

Didn't watch the game, but saw in the box score that the Bruins got the lion's share of the penalties. If anyone watched the game, was that warranted? The article said they were definitely the more physical of the two teams.

Just watching the brawl, I have no idea how the Bruins ended up going down two men.

Thornton gives a weak slash on Burrows, maybe you call a slash on that if its been a chippy game and you are trying to stop something from happening.  Burrows turns around and gets his stick up at Thornton's head (hit him more in the shoulder, but what the hell is he doing).  Thornton then goes after Burrows.  THREE Canucks jump Thornton throwing punches at him.  TWO-THREE additional Canucks throw punches at him from the bench.

Weise fights Horton.    Lucic was half on the bench on a line-change and came back on the ice as there were six Canucks on the ice in the fighting.  He went after Burrows and Alex chickens.

Result:

Thornton gets a penalty for slashing
Burrows DOESN'T get a penalty for spearing/sticking his stick in Thornton's face that led to Thornton going ape on Burrows.
Thornton gets a roughing penalty for going after Burrows.
The THREE Canucks that jump Thornton DON'T get a roughing call.
LUCIC gets a roughing penalty for going after Burrows, 10 minutes and a game for leaving the bench.
Burrows and Lapierre get 10 minute misconducts for Vancouver.
Horton/Weise get 5 for fighting.

So the net is Boston gets 6 minutes of servable penalties and Vancouver gets a 2 minute 5 on 3 + an additional 2 minute PP.  That's a joke.

And the Wild's freefall continues, this makes 11 losses in their last 12 games (1-8-3) - looks like the bloom is off Mike Yeo's rose....

Too early to stick a fork in Tampa's season?

9 points out of a playoff spot? No, I think it's fair to stick a fork in 'em. It'll take an epic 2nd half for them to save their season.

In game 1161 of his NHL career, Shane Doan recorded his first NHL hat trick last night.

Solid, if unspectacular career.  Since his second season he has never put up less than 50 points (well, he did have a 49 point season).  Ten 20 goal seasons (another with 18)

Yeah. He's never been an elite goal scorer, but, I was surprised it took him this long to get a hatty.

yeah and the PP's won Vancouver the game.

out of all the penalties I read on the boxscore, watching the highlights of the game told me one important thing.  Burrows is a massive POS.

I'd really like for the Leafs to stick a dagger into Buffalo coming up, that would be pretty sweet.

Looks like the Bruins Brad Marchand is in trouble with a disciplinary hearing set with Shanahan, due to low-hitting Vancouver's defenceman Sami Salo, who suffered a concussion on account of Marchand's hit.  Marchand was given a game misconduct and a clipping penalty on the play.

Didn't want to make a new thread, but what a crazy league:

I keep watching it and while I don't like hits that go too low, the contact looks above the knee to me, which is by definition, no clipping.  And I have a hard time getting super angry about a player getting a concussion because his head hit the ice.

But it's cool though because it gave Gillis and Vingneault an opportunity to call players dirty and whine about how someone needs to take care of Marchand if the league won't.

It's hard to tell exactly where it hits - to me, it looks like the brunt of contact is directly with the knee - but, my issue with it is more that it was pretty clearly intentional. Marchand makes it look like he's about to the play the puck and then, when he gets to it, brings his stick back in and goes down to hit Salo with a low-bridge type hit. He's apparently having a phone hearing, which means a max of 5 games. I would have preferred to see more on that one, not necessarily because of the hit itself, but because of how it played out.

Nowhere near as dirty as Tucker on Peca.  Way I see it Marchand, was going to play the puck, took a look, realized he was going to get creamed and tried to bail out of it by being the hitter instead of the hittee.  If salo doesn't bang his head, picks himself up and has a go at Marchand, would the refs have even called a penalty.  I know they didn't do much on the Tucker hit.
