2011 Blue Jays/MLB Thread

Yeah. Remember when we were talking about premium FA's signing five year deals? That was cute.

Yeah, but, at the same time, there's are rumblings that teams aren't willing go much more than that on Fielder.

So money was a secondary factor?

Well, it's tough to say when I'm not actually Albert Pujols but a lot of people said the NTC was the hang-up in his dealings with the Marlins. Likewise, most reports out of St. Louis had the Cardinals offering as much on a per year basis.

I don't know what it was that sealed it. I don't think, for example, that it's a crazy coincidence that the two suitors Pujols was the most interested in were places with large hispanic populations and with great weather.

I just don't know anything that points right now to money being the deciding factor.

Apparently the Angels have or are about too sign CJ Wilson too...

Those moves probably make them a pretty serious wild card contender, providing they don't make any stupid moves with the guys already on their roster.

EDIT: Weaver, Wilson, Haren, Santana . . . that's a pretty formidable rotation. With Texas losing one of their top starters, the division title is probably in reach for the Angels now.

Provided they get anything out of Wells and maybe Trout develops? I think they look pretty good.

Yeah, pretty much. Obviously, they're hardly a perfect team, but, Pujols is a substantial upgrade to their 1B/DH combo and Wilson really solidifies their rotation. They also upgraded behind the play with Iannetta. I wouldn't consider them to be a WS contender - or, at least, not a favourite - but, they're in pretty good shape to grab a playoff spot.

I suppose the one good thing out of all of this is that all these big-name free agents have so far stayed out of the AL East.  But as Busta pointed out, there will be another major roadblock in the fight for the wild card.

@BLUEJAYS made 3 selections during the minor league phase of the Rule V draft, taking RHP JAVIER AVENDANO from @Cardinals 1B GABRIEL JACOBO from the @Angels and C HECTOR ALVAREZ from the @Mets

So, how about those 2015 Blue Jays? They look like they could be pretty good. I'm talking like 85 wins good.

On the plus side, that team will probably have another 8 or 9 picks in the first 3 rounds of the draft ;)

Guess it was all about the money for Pujols.  :-\

If it was all about the money, he'd be a Marlin - apparently, they offered a contract that was worth close to $300M over 10 years. They also apparently offered Wilson close to $100M.

Mim TcCarver to the footbaseball speakership......Time TcCarver to the ..... Tim McCarver to the baseball announcer Hall of Shame....Hall of Fame.
----------------
McCarver gets the Ford Frick award this year and Tom Cheek gets passed over yet again.  Disturbing that someone could watch McCarver be ridiculed for his awful announcing and then put him in the Hall of Fame for it.
