I'm a world class chef, and a restaurant owner comes to me and says, "I'll give you 50% of the house take, and I'll take care of ALL the expenses to open and operate the restaurant."

You would have to be a complete IDIOT to not take that offer.

For your comparison to be relevant, the NHL owners would have had to have offered Sidney Crosby 50% of revenues personally.

I hear Sid makes a mean baked potato.

Well it depends on what the market is. Is there another group of investors that would give you 53? Or 60?

What if it's an offer that is based on the idea that for years the owner has been paying you 70 percent of the take and he needs you to agree to contractually take 50 because he's incapable of determining your salary on his own.

Anyways, as Potvin noted, this is where the analogy falls apart because the NHL is not a single employer and the PA is not a single person.

Using your example if just a few years ago your owner came up to you and said they were locking you out until you agreed to drop from say 100,000 a year to 75,000 a year, and they would be capping all employees salaries to 1,000,000 a year and that would fix everything and we will let you keep 57% would you like the deal? Especially a few years later when they say they need you to take another paycut because of their mismanagement?

There are NUMEROUS companies across North America, primarily in the auto industry that have done just the same thing over the the last 10 years. Negotiated to lower wages and benefits because of falling profit margins.

Okay, the chef/restaurant analogy isn't the greatest, and really any analogy isn't going to work.  The only thing that really works is comparing it to another pro team sport.

An analogy is not meant to show two things are exactly the same. It's used to illustrate a point, in this case being the relative importance of players to the business.

Aren't all employees important to their businesses?

Conflicting reports on the cancellation of the Winter Classic today.

Dreger and McKenzie say yes, Shoalts says no.

Yeah, major divide on this in the twittersphere right now.

Shoalts is the only one I'm seeing saying it won't be cancelled, who else is on that side?

Dreger, McKenzie and LeBrun all say it will be, but they all qualify it with that it could change, but they "expect" it to be cancelled while Shoalts' tweet was a little more definitive in saying it wouldn't be.

They all want to be the first to not only break any concrete news but also the first to give their expectations.  This is where Twitter really fails because its easy to misinterpret fact and opinion.  Cryptic tweets like this from Bob for example, where it appears he gives both personal feelings and he also seems to refer to colleagues that have a firm report.

@TSNBobMcKenzie: I know some reporting Winter Classic won't be canceled today but I expect it will. Always allow for possible change of mind but I doubt it.

I just don't see any value in that report.  He seems to tweet just for tweets sake but comes across as a twat.

BIG reason Classic survives today: hearing #NHL and #theplayers expect soon to MEET again. Talks this week have led to that much.
Retweeted by Michael Grange

I've also seen more (but that's the latest.)

I'm not sure anyone knows for sure yet.

I have my doubts. In order to get everything in line for the WC to run smoothly, they'd have to getting on things ASAP. Another meeting isn't really an indication that anything is close. Unless that meeting is going to happen this weekend (in which case, the league might ask UofM for an extension until Monday for their next deposit payment), the WC will almost certainly be postponed until next season (whenever that may be).

Real_ESPNLeBrun: Bill Daly and Steve Fehr have tentatively agreed on resuming bargaining, however, they've yet to agree on the format, the location, the day

Real_ESPNLeBrun: In other words, still very early in that discussion however looks like talks should resume at some point soon

Okay, I'm now willing to wager it's toast;

Ignore reports that Winter Classic cancellation to be delayed. Impeccable sources tell The Star game will be cancelled this afternoon.

another one:

As we have been saying all week,Winter Classic will be cancelled today.Or if you're an optimist...call it a postponement...for 12 months.

I have to say this absolutely sucks for Leaf fans.
I'm not even a Leaf fan and I am upset.
I was so looking forward to the game and especially to 24/7.
It is a real shame that arguably the 2 most popular teams in the NHL (except maybe for the Habs) are going to have their time in the spotlight pushed aside for this dispute.
A real shame.

Mods - What's the second worst expletive I'm allowed to express my sorrow here? - I want to save the worst one for when they officially cancel the season (whatever that is.) - And no, I will not accept "mittens."
