2012 Toronto Blue Jays Thread

Rasmus has 15 HR so far this season, and 49 RBI.  He had 14 HR and 53 RBI all of last season.  Could hit 30 HR at this point.
HGH is a helluva drug.

All joking aside, the guy has that kind of ability.  He strikes me as a guy who maybe lives in his head a lot too much.  Between Tony Larussa not liking him and his Dad yammering ideas into his head I think his career got derailed in St. Louis to the point that he was headed for bust territory.  He got a fresh start in Toronto and I think this is actually where Rasmus SHOULD be at this point in his career.

He had a 23 HR 28 double season two years ago.  Having him hit 5-7 more homeruns two years later is well within his talent level.  There really isn't a good reason for why Rasmus shouldn't be a perennial all-star based on his talent level.

Concerning would be his performance against the AL East at this point, but he hasn't really faced them since he started hitting.

So I discovered today that EE is a free agent at the end of the season. Is this a guy who the Jays should try to trade at the deadline or is he someone who can be a solid piece of a contending team in a year or so and therefore should be re-signed?

I'd re-sign him. He's not old and I doubt he'll command an over-the-moon salary based on a year and a bit of performance. The Jays signed Bautista for a reasonable amount after he hit 54 HR. I'd imagine they could do the same with Encarnacion. He's adequate at 1st base should they need him there, and he's pretty much perfect for the DH role.

That depends on a few factors. Firstly, where the Jays are in the playoff hunt at the end of July (and the end of August, depending on trade waivers play out for him). Secondly, what kind of progress the team is making on signing him to a reasonable extension, and thirdly, what kind of offers the team gets for him. If the Jays are still in the playoff hunt, there's no way they can move him, but, if they're out of it, the other two factors will decide whether or not he's shipped out.

Thanks TML, I also like EE and his improvements as a player, the fielding is the biggest question mark for me and also whether he can sustain close to his current level of performance.

Yeah I should have added to my original post that it would only make sense to even consider moving him if the Jays are not in the postseason mix. I guess the pessimist in me expects them to be around .500 and not really part of the equation by the time the trading deadline nears, but you never know.

And I get your other points, makes perfect sense. However I was more wondering what you and others thought about how valuable he is to the team and if he you saw him as being a possible fit on a contending Jays team (which I don't see this current Jays team being atm)?

Consider power hitting 1B/DH types are an area the team's farm system isn't exactly flush with, I'd say he's probably more valuable to the team if he's re-signed than if he's traded - unless, of course, some team really wants to part with an elite prospect or two for him.

Romero with another rough outing so far, trailing 6-3 to the Royals after 6. Bautista and Rasmus with home runs.

Jays could fall back to .500 if they lose.

The team is .500 yet they are still only 2.5 games out of one of the wild card berths.  I'm not saying AA should strip the farm to take a run, but I wouldn't mind seeing him make a move or two that could help with a push.  We can talk about the future all we want, but is an opportunity like this when the usual contenders are sputtering along going to come around all that often?

All-in-all a very successful draft, I'd say.

That remains to be seen I think, but they were able to get their top picks to sign within their budget, so it's a good start.

That might be overkill, but certainly would give the Jays a serious shot at the playoffs... assuming Morrow gets back by the end of July and Romero gets his mojo back real soon.

I can't think of a name but more of a 14-game win/year #3 pitcher who can go 7 innings on most nights. Someone who costs 1 prospect, not 3-4.

btw how about the jays get matt garza from the cubs he might come cheap then greinke imo.

Probably cost more, actually. He's still under team control for another season, whereas Greinke is a free agent this winter and, with the new CBA, any team that picks him up in a trade can't get compensation picks if they lose him.
