If a guy gets thrown out, instead of kicking him off the draw, he has to line up a foot further back from the circle to give the other team an advantage.
What a terrible rule. The refs already take their sweet time and draw 80% of the faceoffs on with their hesitations on the puck drop. So now because they can't be bothered to drop the puck, teams are going to be punished. I don't understand why the officials decided to start pull that stuff on faceoffs.

I feel confident in saying that this one won't make it into a single regular season game. I have my doubts it even makes to the point where they try it out in the pre-season.

The intent of the rule is to punish players who are intentionally trying to get kicked out of the draw though. All too often after icings a winger will go in to take the draw and blatantly cheat in order to get kicked out. Then he gingerly skates over to the winger spot while the centre takes his time to get ready for the draw. This gives the defensive players on the ice an extra 10-15 seconds to catch their breath. It's basically delaying the game, and I'd love to see it stopped.
So as long as this rule only goes into effect for faceoffs after icings, I'm all for it.

That seems like overkill. What if the natural centre comes in to take the draw and he's kicked out because, like others have mentioned, sometimes the linesman kinda just sucks at dropping the puck?
If I was making the rule it would be the 1ft back thing and it's at the refs discretion. It's pretty obvious when a winger comes in with no intention of actually taking the faceoff.
bustaheims said:I think the better solution is to speed up the puck drop. Don't allow the shenanigans that go on after an icing to delay things. If one team isn't set up in time, that's their problem.
bustaheims said:To solve the winger getting intentionally thrown out thing - make it so after an icing, if the officials deem that one of the players taking the draw had no intention of doing so, don't let the other team replace him. He gets tossed from the draw and the other team gets an uncontested face-off win. That will get rid of it entirely.

L K said:I have no doubt that it does happen, but how is this the solution you come to? Just drop the puck. Make it 7 seconds after you line up the puck is dropped or something like that. And if you get thrown out, there is 7 seconds until the puck is dropped whether you are ready or not. That solves it, not some stupid step back from the line rule.
L K said:Honestly, the number of times I have watched a linesman fake the puck drop is absurd.

That should be the standard protocol for when somebody gets kicked out of the draw. But there should be a harsher penalty for when somebody intentionally gets kicked out in order to negate the consequences of an icing.

Again, I 100% agree with you on this. But the rule that the NHL is discussing has nothing to do with that.
L K said:Having the player take a step back doesn't prevent them from doing a big circle and acting outraged before the line up a foot back from the circle. They can then line up too close and have the linesman make them inch back a little more and delay the puck drop even more.
