@BruceMcCurdy

Since 2009 #Oilers have had 43 draft picks in 2nd round or later.  They have scored 7 NHL goals.  Tobias Rieder has 4, others combined have 3

After last night, that number jumped to 9. Rieder has 6 of them - all this season.

EDIT: It also doesn't get much better if you include picks outside the top 10 or go back a few seasons.

Well he said 2nd round or later, Klefbom was a 1st rounder.

Which is why you'll no longer see any mention of Klefbom.

;D  Although including him makes it arguably worse too.

It's quite amazing.  I think it's actually difficult to be this bad for this long.

It takes a really strong belief in your convictions to sit there and basically do nothing - certainly nothing significant - while your team is this bad for so long. The Oilers' front office is certainly something.

Thing is, I always sort of attributed it to the ongoing struggles with their arena. Like, "We can't do anything to fix up the team playing in this decrepit old barn so maybe you Oilers fans should lean on city council to help us out".

Now that they've successfully conned the city out of millions though...I just don't get it.

Either they've become so entrenched in the position they had before getting the arena upgrade they were looking for that they've forgotten how to operate differently, or they're simply, you know, incompetent. While I understand their difficulty attracting UFAs, there's very little that can justify their awful drafting record or their inability to get useful trades made. A lot of scouting can be done on the cheap these days - with the amount of video and such available, you can get a good amount of information on a small budget - and they have enough quality assets that can be moved to address needs, they're simply either unwilling to or have placed an unrealistic price on those assets.

I really think that one of the best pieces of evidence for the organization's inertia and hubris was their decision to draft Yakupov. You had the entire hockey world screaming that it didn't make sense. That Reinhart or Murray made way more sense organizationally and that by trading the pick they probably could have made up whatever perceived value they would lose by not taking the "best player available". They just seemingly wanted to make the worst decision possible, Yakupov's relatively disappointing start notwithstanding.

And that's what drives me nuts about the way people say that if you tank "you could end up like Edmonton". There's just so thick a layer of bad decision making and poorly thought out strategy on top of their bad results that I think at this point you'd really have to try to be as bad an organization as they are. It's really not a danger for anyone else.

Yeah. I think people like to overlook the importance of quality management when it comes to team building. Pretty much every example of a failed rebuild via "tanking" (or, really, any other method) is strongly influenced by having poor decision makers steering the ship.

Edmonton is a ridiculously inexperienced roster:
- 2nd youngest team in the league
- fewest games played by forwards and goalies and 2nd fewest among their dmen.

The vultures are circling trying to pick off something for nothing.

Patience is a virtue in this situation.

The season is a writeoff in terms of the playoffs so make it count in the Connor McDavid sweepstakes.

A coaching change probably won't hurt if they bring in a decent coach because these guys are in learning mode. Another coach = another experience.

Are they underachieving? Yeah, some - particularly on the PP.

1. Roll the roster some (maybe move Perron for example)
2. Enjoy the draft picks in a deep draft
3. Get a real NHL starter.
4. Add some experienced D over the summer.

And they'll probably be a bubble team next year.

I don't see why they should panic.

I think this has been one of their biggest problems. Not to take anything away from the guys they have, but getting that solidifying force in net can make all the difference.

Jean B?liveau has passed away

"Gentleman" Jean was a fixture for fans of les Habitants and for hockey fans in general back then, with his grace & style. The multi-talented B?liveau won over even non-Habs fans.

He was truly one of the game's best centre's to lace on a pair of skates.

RIP Monsieur B?liveau.

How did Calgary suddenly turn it around and leapfrog the Oilers development?  For years we've heard how great the Oilers will be with all their high draft picks and they continue to be dead last in the league.  They may just get McDavid which should finally help them, but man, what a disaster in Edmonton.
