I thought that, but you'd think that Philly would grieve this?  They wouldn't want to pay him a dime.

Unless they can prove Timmonen knew about the blood clots before signing his contract, they don't have a case.

The late NHLer Pavol Demitra, whose career spanned sixteen seasons in the league, including the KHL, will be honoured in a documentary film.

Demitra was killed in the Yaroslavl Locomotive plane crash that took the lives of the local KHL team, back in 2010,  of which top-named NHLers Brad McCrimmon and Demitra, were a part of, including former Maple Leaf (and a proud Canadian citizen, too) Igor Korolev.

StapeNewsday: BREAKING NEWS: Charles Wang has agreed to sell the #Isles to John Ledecky, former co-owner of the Capitals, and investor Scott Malkin.

Good news for the Islanders, I imagine. Bad news for those of us that like Wang jokes.

Interesting to see what the move to Brooklyn, without a new Arena, will do for the team's value. Forbes most recent list had them at 195 million. I bet the sale price is 275.

No more Charles Wang!

At least the new owners know something about hockey.
Hope this deal brings the Islanders some much-needed 'luck' in more ways than one.

Sharks will go into training camp with no captain and no alternates.

What a strange/stupid thing to do.

I don't see why it's stupid. Untried, sure, but it's not like there's a real necessity for captains or alternates.

Yeah. I think people get a little too hung up on who has the letters on the front of their jerseys. Not having a captain or alternates doesn't change who is part of the leadership group or anything like that. It just removes some pretty marginal responsibilities.

They're starting camp without captains, but they'll pick a new one (or give it back to Thornton) by the time the season starts.

But that's why I don't really get it.  I mean, I'm sure its being used as some form of culture change because of the failed playoff runs, but if the faces in the room are the same I just don't really see the point.  If they hand it back to Thornton it is just a tedious exercise and if they don't, I just don't really see why they can't just say "we want to try a different approach".  I mean, what is a 35 year old Joe Thornton going to show in training camp as a leader that is going to be any different from any other year?

That's mostly what I don't really get.  I mean ultimately the captain drops the ceremonial puck, has added media responsibility and talks to the ref regarding questionable on ice calls.  At its worst you risk pissing off Thornton/Marleau with this move and the best case scenario is you market Couture or Vlasic as your next captain.  I just don't really see the benefit from something that amounts to an insiginficant change in the performance of the team.

I think the marketing effect of who the captain is tends to be overstated or, at the very least, it's maybe not the same in San Jose as it might be in Toronto or Montreal.

So if, say, the Sharks think that Thornton has become someone they don't necessarily want their young players emulating but they also think that Couture/Vlasic or whoever isn't necessarily ready for the added pressure then there's really no downside.

Steve Moore has apparently settled his lawsuit with Todd Bertuzzi and the Canucks:

http://espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/11375870/steve-moore-lawsuit-todd-bertuzzi-vancouver-canucks-settled-court

Terms won't be released but I hope both Bertuzzi and the team are significantly lighter in the wallets after this.

Moore's brother has now stated that there has not been a settlement reached.

Speculation seems to be that Bertuzzi's camp is trying to settle things (or to have them appeared to be settled) before the season to improve his attractiveness as an FA.

The Canucks are also saying that a settlement has been reached, and they have absolutely no interest in improving Bertuzzi's attractiveness.

"Canucks Sports & Entertainment confirms that a mutually agreeable and confidential settlement of the action commenced by Steve Moore against Todd Bertuzzi and the Vancouver Canucks has been reached," the Canucks said in a statement. "The settlement is a result of mediation sessions with former Ontario Chief Justice Warren Winkler. No further details will be disclosed and the Canucks respectfully decline requests for comment."

I think Moore's brother is out of the loop on this one.

They love hockey, don't they? ...

Saku Koivu retired today. 255 goals, 832 points and 1100+ games. Still, it's hard to believe there was an extended period of time where he was the Canadiens' best player.

He was a warrior and I would of taken him on my favourite team any day of the week.
