On a non-Leafs note, big props to the Islanders for coming out of the 1st round with Barzal and Beauvillier.

Yup, they lose Griffin but that's a good haul.

eh, it didn't seem like Reinhart was developing as well as they had hoped. Of course in hindsight that wasn't looking like a great pick. 6 defencemen were picked immediately after him, 3 of them are on another level right now and 2 could surpass him as well.

Not just props to them but I really think some people should look at what they and Boston did as a reality check on how valuable teams thought first rounders were. If the best asset Hamilton, Reinhart or Lucic can fetch is a mid round pick, why would people still think Phaneuf was worth that?

Today's trades set the Leafs up to have 10 picks in this year's draft. That's the most since they had 12 in 2001 - when there were 9 rounds.

The moves are growing on me.  I still really wish they grabbed Jacob Larsson but I can live with the prospect depth.

The Leafs have a good number of picks tomorrow

Rd 2. #34
Rd 2. #61
Rd 3. #64
Rd 3. #68
Rd 4. #95
Rd 4. #107
Rd 5. #125
Rd 6. #155
Rd 7. #185

If they find a way to make another move or two early tomorrow to add a few more picks I would be more than happy with that.

Mark Hunter says he sees Mitch Marner playing centre in the NHL.

That's great to hear. Like I've said before, I'm sure we'll see him playing centre with the Knights next season and his development will take off from there.

Woah, Harkins didn't go either in the 1st round? I wasn't crazy about him at 24 but now he's an option. So we're guaranteed one of Sprong, Kylington, Bracco, Roy, or Harkins. That's what my order of preference would be.

Yeah, at the time of the 2012 draft I was against drafting him with the Leafs pick, never thought he'd go where he did. Not a big loss for the Islanders considering how they made out.

Mark Hunter had damn well better hope he's right about picking Marner whether he plays center or not.

For this team to ultimately succeed its not as much as what they get in the first round as it is what they get in the later rounds. That's what has caused the disaster they are in prospect-wise.

Well, Ive been away from all the news and I know nothing about the draft so far.

What's the overall mood about how it's gone so far? Good, bad, undecided?

Can't speak for everyone, but I feel very positive. They picked Marner for his skill and drive, irrespective of his current position or size.

They turned a 24th pick into a 34th, 61st, and 68th pick with two shrewd trades because the players they were targeting were still available, and just gave themselves more ammo. It's the opposite of a Burke draft.

I think, at this stage of the rebuild and at this part of the draft, the move isn't going to change much in terms of the potential of the player they'll get, while the Leafs really need to add extra picks wherever they can.

omgitsdomi: Leafs trade 24th (value of 308) for picks 29 and 61 (value of 450). Very smart move.

Value according to this http://t.co/jEtlO3vlfI

This, so much this.

Pretty interesting that they're adhering to this kind of reasoning. Makes sense to me, but of course there's a point of diminishing returns.

I'm disappointed that they couldn't get some more first round picks, but I can only assume it's because the deals just weren't there.

And there isn't anything wrong with getting 2016 or 2017 draft picks either.  It's not like the Leafs players all had vesting No Movement clauses that enacted at midnight of June 26th.

Where can I watch Rounds 2 through 7 online? I do not currently get the NHL Network channel and I am thinking about changing that right now, but if it is available online then that works too.

Does anyone know?

Shrewd?

I don't think so.

Maybe the first trade down was a reasonable move but the second one was unnecessary and ill considered.

Trading down in a top heavy draft is not a sign of genius.

Only Boston fared worse than we did yesterday (apparently turning down a higher pick in order to make one of their trades).

I am severely disappointed. They ruined the hockey season and now they are ruining the off season with more "no hope hockey" on the horizon (note: I don't mind the pain, I can take that, and I don't care about crappy hockey for a few years -- we have had a gut full of that already -- but to forgo even the cosmetics of a serious rebuild after all the promises offers no promise)

Why they could not have obtained another first round pick with all the players they purportedly intend too trade is mystifying.

Quantity over quality seldom yields better results.

Yes, I am damned disappointed.

True, but if they're indeed serious about tearing up the core of this team, they're going to have to get on it.

And as much as I like the splitting cards thing they did yesterday, the Leafs are going to need elite talent to build around sooner rather than later.
