2016-2017 NHL Thread

Man, there's only 7 points separating 12th place and 28th place in the league today.

I have a feeling that this trade deadline is going to be very interesting.

Probably even more boring than usual really. Who are the sellers? Just Colorado and Arizona right now. If guys like Duchene and Landeskog do get traded it'll likely be after the season. So we'll basically be watching the great Martin Hanzal sweepstakes.

All the more reason for the Leafs to stealth sell? Weak 2017 draft means more teams are likely to part with 1sts. Huge pileup at the margins of the playoffs means more teams looking for separation (JvR to the rescue). Traditionally tough divisions looking a bit wide open too. Minnesota needs to strike while the Dubnyk is hot.

I was thinking along the lines of what herman suggested above.  There might be strong demand combined with low supply.

Last night, the Canucks put their first shot on goal about half an hour into the game. They did have 13 attempts at the net, 4 of which were blocked, but seriously, this was against the Coyotes.

There's still plenty of time for separation. And, in terms of sellers, I'd add New Jersey, Detroit, Buffalo, and Carolina. 7 points is a pretty big gap to overcome while also fighting off each other. I'd guess at least 2 of those teams will be 10+ points out by the deadline. Tampa, Florida, and the Islanders should also be seriously evaluating their selling options - they could easily find themselves buried by the deadline.

That being said, I also think a lot of the bubble/wildcard teams could be looking at abandoning the typical buyer/seller paradigm. There are some - the Leafs included - where management recognizes they're on a longer timeline rather than focusing on this season. I wouldn't be surprised to see more "hockey" trades rather than buyer/seller deals.

Also, they're introducing the All-Stars slowly as Snoop Dogg dances along to some of his hits at center ice.

I'd say this is the weirdest thing I've ever seen but this is about par for the course for the NHL at the All-Star Game or Awards show at this point.

The NHL not going to the Olympics still.  This just seems dumb from a marketing standpoint.  The US actually pays attention to the Olympic Hockey.  Let's ignore it because it screws up a schedule that already has no problem accommodating a stupid tournament and putting an arbitrary week off.

You can call Gary Bettman a lot of things but I don't think stupid is one of them. I think the reason they're so eager to get out of the Olympics after being so eager to get into them is that they've seen the effect Olympic hockey actually had on marketing, saw it was negligible and have decided it's not worth the risk/disruption.

Fair enough.  On to my next complaint.

Not every single conversation between players at the AllStar game is a matter of a younger player "soaking up" information from someone with experience.  Declaring every time two players talk that they are solely talking about hockey is dumb.

Not many people get to say they scored on Carey Price.  Nice of Price to let Getzlaf's kid score.

I would've stoned 'im on a tight butterfly and waved dismissively.
