2016 Summer Housekeeping Thread

We can add that the #Leafs will also have an overage penalty this season of roughly $512,000 due to 3 players having hit bonuses last year.

Robidas speaks!

https://mapleleafshotstove.com/2016/09/15/an-update-on-stephane-robidas-and-the-toronto-maple-leafs-cap-situation

The article also clears up the confusion over SOIR:
The fact that Robidas lost his entire 2015-16 to injury also does not make him eligible Season Opening Injury Reserve (SOIR) ? which wipes the cap hit ? due to the fact that Robidas is on a one-way contract (in simple terms, SOIR is designed for situations where a non-NHL regular ends up stuck on the NHL roster due to an injury in training camp).

SOIR is not a thing. The term does not appear anywhere in the CBA.

Also, the rule they used to make up that term doesn't actually have cap implications. It relates to actual salary of the narrow scope of players it impacts. The term SOIR should be ignored and forgotten.

I believe you; my own foray into reading the CBA proved fruitless. Not sure why people keep referencing it, but MLHS' description quoted above made some sense.

Out of curiosity, which section of the CBA were you referring to? I've been poring over 50.10 which outlined some Opening Day examples. I couldn't see any difference from LTIR as I already understood it.

I emailed CapFriendly (the source of the confusion) about this earlier in the summer, because, like you, I couldn't find anything resembling it in the parts of the CBA I felt were relevant. Turns out, it's in section 15.6, which is specifically about rules around training camp.

The problem is CapFriendly found this rule, tacked a name on it, and posted a really poorly formatted/worded explanation of it on their site. People read that, and, thanks to the format on the site, took it out of context, and, well, here we are.

Baller. Thanks!

15.6
Any Player who becomes disabled during Training Camp, or who reports to Training Camp disabled as a result of a hockey related injury incurred during the off-season, and who has qualified during the preceding season, including Playoffs, for at least fifty (50) games credit for the purposes of the Pension Plan or is on a one-way SPC, shall receive his Paragraph 1 NHL Salary and Signing Bonus until he receives appropriate medical clearance. All other Players will be paid a "Daily Rate" (as that term is defined in this Section 15.6 below) until they receive appropriate medical clearance, such Daily Rate to be determined as follows:

[blah blah blah]

Speaking of Robidas, he is present in London at the Rookie Camp. I think he's being let off the leash now that there is effectively no chance of recovery (conditioning even beyond his knee injury), and I wonder if he will be hired to the development staff following his contract expiration/retirement.

Robidas says he's now a part time consultant with Leafs, will be with rookies, Marlies, NCAA prospects. Not skated since last year.

so what does Robadis save us now that he is retired (Off the cap of course)

He hasn't filed retirement papers. We still pay him in full and it goes against the cap (even if he retired due to the age he signed the contract).

The benefit is that it frees up a roster slot.

He's not retired. It seems strange but just taking another job doesn't mean a guy is retired. Chris Pronger's cap hit is still with the Coyotes despite his being with the NHL.

In what I'm sure is just the first in many, many season predictions, USA Today has theirs and it has the Leafs with 71 points, ahead of only the Canucks:

USA Today Point Predictions

This is going to be a weird season. I keep trying to figure out projected standings and the only teams that I see that I'm comfortable saying will be 70-ish point teams are Vancouver and Columbus. I look at teams like the Leafs, Devils, Sabres, and even Ottawa and Colorado after their coaching changes and think that they should be better than those USA projections. But somebody's gotta finish 24th-28th, and I'm not really sure which teams those guys would get replaced by.

I believe Vegas released over/under odds for the Leafs at 80.5 points. Quite a different projection from what USA Today has them at.
