2017-18 Toronto Maple Leafs - General Discussion

Any word if Andersen will miss time due to the Perry skate to the head?

I don't want Andersen hurt, but I'm curious to see the new and improved Sparks.  His AHL numbers have been Hasek-like, .944% and under 2 GAA, crazy good in the AHL.  I know he committed to a new fitness regiment in the off season and shed some weight, I'm wondering if Sparks is future #1 goalie material for the Leafs.

Honestly the Leafs should take this chance to stash him on the IR for a week or two and just give him a little vacation. Let him re-charge his batteries so he's 100% ready to go down the stretch and into the playoffs. This isn't something I've been able to ever say as a Leafs fan I don't think, but we probably have the goalie depth to handle him out for a little bit.

Considering how well Sparks has played, I see ZERO chance of him making it through waivers when Freddie returns.  For that reason, Pickard gets the call-up as he's waiver-exempt unless he stays up for a long period of time.

Yes to both of these things.

Sparks would be waiver-exempt as he would be an emergency recall. Rules state NHL teams must have two goalies on the active roster, so when one gets injured, then the replacement is exempt from waivers in order to make the team compliant with the number of players.

Emergency Recall only occurs if they place him on IR (which means he has to miss a minimum of 1 week).  That said, if they don't put him on IR, then they have to create a roster spot to call a goalie up and we already have roster size issues with the impending return of Soshnikov.  So, if he's going to miss any games, they probably have to put him on IR anyways.  So, that's my roundabout way of saying you are right: they will have the option of calling up Sparks without worrying about losing him on waivers when Freddie returns as long as Freddie goes on IR.

I'm ignorant of the waiver rules but why is Pickard waiver exempt while Sparks isn't?  Pickard is older and has played way more NHL games than Sparks has, seems odd.  What are the rules?

Pickard has already passed through waivers this year (before he was traded to the Marlies).  He remains waiver exempt for the remainder of the year unless he plays 10 NHL games or stays on the Leafs roster for 30 days.

Ah ok, forgot that he already cleared waviers, so he would require waivers as well as Sparks but has already passed them this season (except for the stipulations you posted above)

Sparks passed through waivers at the beginning of the season too, so unless I'm mistaken that should apply to him as well.

Speaking of Sparks v Pickard

This is the sweetest thing I've read today. The other thing was a Rogers contract so, high bar.

Good point.  Might there be a stipulation that passing through waivers before the start of the season doesn't count?

EDIT:  It seems there is no such stipulation.  Sparks won't have to pass through waivers unless he plays 10 games or is on the Leafs roster for 30 days (Emergency Recall doesn't count towards that).

I've longed wondered why more teams don't do this too. One of our coaches (Carlyle, I think) did it from time to time and I liked the set-up. It'd make a lot of sense too for our team since Babcock clearly isn't the biggest fan of Moore. It would allow extra shifts for Matthews, Kadri, and maybe even Nylander and Marleau from time to time.

It would also mean Babcock could have both Carrick and Polak in the line-up, and adjust playing time accordingly depending on the score situation.

5. Toronto is at the maximum 50 contracts, which is not where you want to be approaching the deadline. As Nick Kypreos reported last weekend, Josh Leivo asked for a trade. He made it clear he prefers to stay and play, but I think Kasperi Kapanen?s call-up was the last straw for him.

It?s tough when you are on the roster all year, then passed by someone else. Some people were wondering if he made a mistake signing an extension for next season, rather than going to unrestricted free agency. I?d say no, because he probably settles for a two-way contract instead of the one-way he did get. Also likely: Nikita Soshnikov, since he is no longer waiver exempt and there is no way he goes unclaimed. The concussion scared some, but there is definitely interest. Teams have said in the past Toronto has asked a higher-than-expected price for both players. I also think the Maple Leafs would keep money to help Matt Martin find a new home. No doubt they have checked with the Islanders.

Don't let me down, Leafs, the way you did when you signed Martin in the first place and then re-signed Polak...
