2017-2018 NHL Thread

We are late to the party on this one but this is, hands down, the dumbest of all of these lists that I've ever seen.

Remember how Mats Sundin's poor leadership skills meant the Leafs never got out of the second round when he was Captain? Or how when the Leafs played the Senators the Leafs lost all the time?

No, because that was Saku Koivu and Daniel Alfredsson. The idea that Sundin was a "worse" captain than either of them is ridiculous.

Media: You can't measure leadership.

Also media: Here's a ranking measuring who the best captains were.

Bourque being that high is also kinda funny. Longest serving captain of the Bruins, couldn't win a Cup until he left them. So if Cups while being a captain aren't a big deal how is Sundin not here?

I mean it's just so dumb. Messier wins two cups as Captain. Gretzky, meanwhile, won four cups as Captain and was the Captain of both the '87 and '91 Canada Cup teams despite Messier also being around.

But Messier is 8 spots higher?

Here's a list of the best leaders ever, created by a bunch of guys who never really experienced what they were all like as leaders.

Also when Sweden won Gold at the 2006 Olympics, Sundin was the Captain ahead of both Lidstrom and Alfredsson. But ok.

Ray Bourque: Captain for 15 years, won no cups #5

Nik Lidstrom: Captain for 6 years, won 1 cup #12

Joe Sakic: Captain for 15 years, won 2 cups #15

This guy?s career needs to be abbreviated.

Here?s a bit more context to Rinaldo?s actions

Clean open ice hit on Mackinnon that looks like the shorter guy?s helmet hits him in the face a bit. Girard skates by, ostensibly to jaw at Rinaldo but actually didn?t even say anything, and takes a bare fist to the face for his trouble. Looks like Zac thought someone was going to fight him for targeting their star. Erik Johnson proceeds to exact revenge for his partner.

Would love to see the league really make an example out of Rinaldo on this one. Completely uncalled for act from a guy who already has a pretty lengthy history of supplemental discipline. Girard is skating past him, not looking at him, and make incidental contact, so Rinaldo sucker punches him? I'd give him 20+.

If only Colorado had a tough guy like Rinaldo to keep Rinaldo in check.  The guy should just be banned.  Start punishing the team for dressing fools.  Every suspended player counts toward your 20 skaters.  See how long teammates defend a guy like Rinaldo for being ?a good guy? when he is fucking over your lineup.

Something that won't be considered when determining a suspension, but I wish would, is Girard's relative youth. Not that it would be better to have hit an older player like that necessarily but the risk of a very serious head injury to a player before he's had the chance to establish himself professionally and financially seems like the sort of thing the NHL should want to discourage in the strongest possible way.

I am a Leaf fan for Life but spend a fair amount of time in AZ so I follow the Coyotes.  There are actually folks there who think Rinaldo was justified in his actions as Girard was going to attack him.

Oh, I'm sure. There are stupid people who ignore things like facts and evidence everywhere.

Apparently Girard attacked him with a cross check and there is absolutely zero chance Girard was actually joining play despite fact he was skating by Rinaldo rather than into him?  Who knew?  Stick with your guy I guess no matter what he does. And shoot first ask questions later is the theme.
