2019-2020 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

I would also say that Barrie at 8m per is not something I'd commit to but I think ideas that the team will be able to significantly improve the defense for substantially cheaper than that are probably not too realistic.

Florida lost tonight, although that means that Philly won.  The Panthers are now two points back with a game at hand.  If they win that game at hand they go ahead of the Leafs, but still it's a start.

They play again tomorrow. Need a Leafs win and a Florida loss. Huge ask of the Devils though

The Panthers are currently on a four-game losing streak.  If that losing streak continues throughout this week and the Leafs win theirs, it could give Toronto a bit of a cushion in the standings.  Hope it works that way because the Leafs are having back-to-backs coming up this weekend (Ottawa & Buffalo), which is why they should win the two games (Arizona & Dallas) this week at least.

How soft are they.  Mentally weak.  They probably drink alcohol too

Just something to remember from time to time.

Good lord.

It landed us Matthews.

No forwards remain from that particular lineup...only 2 defensemen...Marincin of all people!!!

I didn't realize it was that bad. I feel like the talent on that roster was worse than the Wings this year.

Kadri, Bozak, JVR, and Lupul would all have been injured there so that obviously didn't help*.

*well, it did in the grand scheme of things of course

Only 7 players who saw NHL action for the Leafs that season are still in the organization, and one of them is on an AHL contract!

I think, by this point, that it is reasonable to conclude this trade was a big fail for Dubas.  Not solely for the fact that Kadri is playing well - how would the Leafs? lineup look with him in it this year? - but he was the one expendable asset that was supposed to return a difference maker.  Objectively and to my subjective eye, Barrie has been a big, big disappointment.  Kerfoot, while fine, is a facsimile of what the Leafs already have in spades.  I acknowledge the value of the salary retention part of the deal, but, really, by any measure this deal has been the worst move Dubas has made as GM.

Hindsight is obviously 20-20 but, still...

Yeah, when I first saw that I was, like, no way.  That was never the intended starting lineup.  This guy is kind of reverse cherry-picking.  (Cherry-pitching, perhaps?)

Thing is, I don't even think the thing there is that the lineup is bad, although it obviously is. To me it's more that on a bad team, and on a team that had been bad for a while, there's not even really a decent prospect in the line-up. Obviously the decisions on Nylander and Marner contribute there but even still I think you'd be hard pressed to find too many NHL lineups that bereft of players who would have at least given a fanbase hope for a brighter future.

I still vote in favour of selling assets that won't be here next year (Barrie).

Barrie -> assets -> Dumba

Something like that (doesn't have to be Dumba, just throwing a name out).  The last step doesn't have to happen in-season, either.  This team should load up for next year.  This year is hexed.
