Marleau traded.
I know, I mean that we had to throw in a 1st. I guess better than losing a roster player? Still.....

Woulf you rather have kept him and dealt players like Kapanen or Johnsson to get cap compliant and keep the 1st?

He said in his reply that it was better than moving a roster player.
I'm just saying it's a tough pill to get out of a one year contract. It was gonna be tough regardless, I guess I was hoping for a 2nd or something.
I think we all were. Let's not forget that Dubas still isn't done because we still don't have the room to sign all 3 and put a team on the ice. Signing those 3 for 14 mill puts us only at 19 players. We're going to be losing a Brown/Hyman as well for virtually nothing unless he can move Zaitsev and that still probably doesn't save Brown.

Those numbers include Horton so we are better off.

Yeah, this trade absolutely lets the Leafs sign those three and ice a team. Trading Brown/Zaitsev now can be done just to free up space to add D.

Please tell me what am I missing?
According to Cap Friendly we have 14 mill in cap space with Horton on LTIR. If Kappy is coming in at 3.2-3.4 and I'd assume the same for Johnsson, you think the Leafs are paying Mitch under 8 million? With those 3 signed we will be at 19 players and only 5 D.

The 14M doesn't include Horton going on LTIR

Count up the totals at the bottom of each position. That's 14 million with Horton's salary included. It's really more like 19.3 million in space.

So we have around $19 million available. Marner, Kapanen, and Johnsson for roughly $16 million. With other moves such as Zaitsev and Brown we should have about 9 or 10 million for 3 D and a couple forwards, most who will be entry level or under a million.

I love the rumoured deals for both Kapanen and Johnsson. Two top six forwards who are similar but also bring different weapons for $7M combined. That's a win.

Kappy and Johnsson for 7 mill or under over 3-4 years is a win.

@TSNBobMcKenzie
When TOR eventually formalizes contract extensions for RFAs Kasperi Kapanen and Andreas Johnsson, I would expect Kapanen?s AAV on a three-year deal to be $3.2M and Johnsson?s AAV on a four-year deal to be $3.4M.

That's great news! Kyle made it work. That's more than enough winger talent to go around. And they're only getting better. Matthews/Marner/Nylander/Kapanen/Johnsson. Growing and hopefully winning together.

Add in Bracco, Mikheyev, Moore, possibly Engvall, Marchment and the forwards look pretty good this coming season. I think Bracco is a good bet for the 3rd line this season, if not traded. I think with this move they can move away from Goat as a 4th line centre as well. It's been a good day in Leaf land.

I?m really wondering what the leafs will do with their defense.

They can trade Brown and replace him with a league-minimum forward but but that still only leaves ~2million in cap space assuming:

- the Johnsson/Kapanen deals as reported
- Marner signs for ~10

Colin Miller would be a nice guy to add, but he won?t fit unless we can rid ourselves of Zaitsev.

Keeping Zaitsev and trading Connor Brown for Matt Benning seems like just about the only plausible thing I?ve heard of. Though Benning is a basically a 3rd-liner, right?

Aside from that, maybe trading Muzzin for some cheaper, not-as-good right side guy under more control is the solution? Though I have no idea what team has a surplus of RD who would want Muzzin.

Don't see the Leafs doing much with their D. If they trade Brown and replace with an ELC,(saving a million), and assuming the numbers are correct with Kappy and Johnsson signing for a combined 6.5. The Leafs will have 13.4 mill to sign Marner add 2 ELC(Marlies) D men(we're at 5 D men now) and 1 ELC forward(we're at 12 with Marner signing). We will save 1.2 to start the year with Hyman on the IR. Don't see the Leafs doing much unless Zaitsev is moved for a cheaper, read worse player, or a guy like Kadri is moved, again making us weaker.

They better get these contracts for Kappy and Johnson signed before rfa offer sheets come their way.
I know its a dick move, but If I'm a rival GM and want to put some additional cap pressure on Toronto, I would be offering Kapanen like 4 yrs at 4 to 4.2 million.  Losing a 2nd round pick to gain a 22 year old with breakaway speed coming off a 20 goal season would seem like a no brainer to a team with cap space....leafs would have to match and would end up spending another 1 million or so per year more then they were planning.
