4 more games before the Sabres are put out of their misery.

A regulation loss tonight paired with Anaheim earning a point, and they officially clinch the best draft lottery odds.

Laine, now only Columbus' 4th line, has 10 goals and 18 points in 41 games with the Blue Jackets this season. 4 goals and 8 points in his last 31 games. Just an absolute disaster of a season for him. And he's due a $7.5mil AAV qualifying offer in the offseason.

It's not even a shooting percentage issue with him - his 13.2% isn't that far off what he put up in his time in Winnipeg (15.2%). He's just been unable to get shots toward the net. If he doesn't get his PP one-timers, he's not very effective.

At least, for the Blue Jackets' sake, Dubois isn't exactly lighting up either, and Roslovic has produced better than I would have expected.

That might be the slightly less kind way to phrase it but I think to some extent he's establishing that ideally he's probably more of a second banana on a line than a guy who can drive play himself.

Possibly. Pair him with an elite playmaker, and he'd probably get back to being a 30+ goal threat.

Or even just on a generally good team with a coach that doesn't hate his guts. Either way, I'd be very interested if I were a team with some money to spend and some talent around in seeing if you could get him on the cheap.

Imagine if the Oilers come knocking.

So we should have taken Laine ahead of Matthews?

Pfft. Why would you want the best goal scorer in the league who is also becoming a well rounded 200 foot player when you can get a one-dimensional defensive sieve?

What a Bizarro league. This gets called now I guess. I'll take it but man just call that or don't call that. Don't decide you set a precedent in the game and you go after that.

Full video is linked in the quote tweet.

He's just garbage, and Caps added fuel to the fire afterward with a since-deleted tweet.
