2020-2021 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

The Leafs pivoted last week to a virtual development camp instead, hoping it would provide prospects with some sense of stability in the most uncertain of times.

?We've tried to maintain as much impact as we can on the player's development while also knowing that this is a challenging time for them,? Dubas told TSN. ?They?re at a pivotal time in their career and progression, and there really is nothing to do. They can't come to Toronto for the camp, they have no games to play, no practices. But once the [NHL] bubble clears out from Toronto we will get our practice rink back and we'll be able to open that up for off-ice training and workouts. We?ve already got a lot of the players that have had their seasons done for a while now [wanting to train], so that accessibility will be a key.?

Just out of interest. Are any of the other 29 teams in the league using their facilities right now?  If they are, why hasn't the NHL shut it down as an unfair competitive advantage against Toronto and Edmonton.

Bruce Boudreau says he is open to the idea of becoming an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs under Sheldon Keefe.

He just hasn?t heard from the Maple Leafs.

?I understand they?ve asked for permission but nobody?s talked to me yet,? Boudreau told The Star in an phone interview on Monday. ?I mean, I think the idea is cool.

?The biggest part of it is I just want to be involved in hockey and coaching in the NHL again next year. My goal is to become a head coach but the idea of being an assistant in Toronto is really intriguing.

?That?s because it?s Toronto.?

Leafs can't directly approach Boudreau until his contract with the Wild expires after this season is officially over, but they can definitely intimate through a source to James Mirtle that a request had been filed with Minnesota previously.

So, because Boudreau is still technically an employee of the Wild, he can't just call up Dubas and ask. But if Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star calls, he can definitely talk all he wants about how he's open to taking an assistant coach position and subsume his will under head coach Keefe's and social distance from the media per Leafs media policy.

I thought he would have been a good fit here, but probably more as a Hakstol/PK replacement and we don't know if there's gonna be a change there yet.

I've been reading that the likelihood of the Blues letting Pietrangelo walk are slim to none.

I'm wondering if they consider moving Parayko if they plan on keeping him.  They need some cap space, and likely a serviceable cheaper LD...that and getting Steen or Bozak off the books.

I don't see them moving Parayko. It might take a Marleau-like deal but I'm sure they'll find a way to get rid of Steen's contract. Just one year left and his actual salary is only $3.5mil (AAV $5.75mil) so that helps too. If they do that and trade another smaller contract or two and I think they can fit him in at $7.5mil (same hit as Tarasenko and O'Reilly).

I know nobody could have predicted a flat cap but that Justin Faulk contract sure is something...

18. St. Louis and Alex Pietrangelo met this week as the grind begins on extension attempts in St. Louis. As I've said many times, I believe the captain wants to stay a Blue. But a couple of sources warned that it hasn't been easy for Pietrangelo to see extensions elsewhere along the lineup (Justin Faulk, Marco Scandella, Brayden Schenn) while his talks completely stalled. A lot of emotion here, and that makes talks more difficult.

Like I said signing Faulk to a contract (especially THAT contract) a year before it was required, before he had played a single game as a Blue, and before the Pietrangelo contract, was mindbogglingly stupid. The fact that a GM can put together a Stanley Cup winning team and then do that months later is incredible.

It's gong to be interesting but they'll have to dump at least 1 or 2 guys. Dunn is and RFA and will be getting a raise and maybe De La Rose will be getting one also. They can do it but it'll be tight and they'll need to find a dance partner. Tarasenko from all accounts will be on LTIR to start the year so they have some time and who knows if he'll even be back. That Faulk contract is out of whack if you ask me. I don't see the Leafs going after AP. I see a guy like Brodie in their sight tho.

I'm just thinking that even if they get Brodie, is that going to be enough of a difference maker?

If I'm Shanahan, Brodie isn't the guy I chase when my chair is a little too warm.

I think they make a bigger splash here, even if it doesn't make long term sense.  Brodie is a 20 minute guy.

Oh I think they'll try to make a bigger splash, but I just see them landing a guy like Brodie. Brodie would be a huge upgrade over Barrie, CC. Would love Pietrangelo but just don't see it happening.

I've always had Liljegren penciled into the line-up but now I'm leaning towards trying to grab Brodie AND either a DeMelo or Gudas. The Athletic noted that EvolvingWild's projections have DeMelo at 2 years/$2.3mil AAV which is lower than I would have expected. I can't see Gudas getting more than that either. It would require a number of more players to be cut (Johnsson, Engvall, Dermott to start, and then maybe even finding a slightly cheaper replacement for either Kerfoot or Andersen) but it seems do-able-ish:

Rielly-Brodie
Muzzin-Holl
Sandin-DeMelo/Gudas
Lehtonen

If we could get DeMelo signed at a rate like that I'd even consider moving Holl since DeMelo could handle those 2RHD minutes very well. Probably wouldn't do that for Gudas though.

Do we still not think Liljegren can handle 3rd pairing RHD minutes at this point?

I still like him and all but in lieu of getting that big splashy defenceman you talked about the next best option could be trying to beef up the bottom of our defence so we don't need to really run a sheltered pairing like Sandin-Liljegren would be.

Also just because Liljegren wouldn't start in the top-6 doesn't mean he wouldn't have a big role to play in our season. Your favourite depth defenceman played over 1/3 of our regular season games and over 1/2 of our play-in games this season.

Yeah, you're right.  But I still think that Shanahan/Dubas are going to have to make a splash and shake up the team with something bigger than what you're proposing...but as you said, if they can't get something big done, then strengthening the 15-20 minute guys is their only alternative.

And I think if they go into the season with Holl as the best option for the second pairing without acquiring a 25 minute monster in front of him, they're toast.

I never really checked these numbers before, but I was looking at how Muzzin-Holl did as a pairing and was pretty surprised to see the results. There were 56 different pairings this year that played a minimum of 400 minutes together (Muzzin-Holl were at 492 minutes). This is where they finished in a number of different stats:

CF: 52.9% (14th)
GF: 53.8% (22nd)
xGF: 56.3% (7th)
on-ice Sv%: 90.00 (53rd)
off. zone faceoff %: 37.37 (54th)

This tells me that despite starting more shifts in the defensive zone than almost any other pairing they had pretty good possession numbers and were mostly let down by playing in front of Andersen during one of his worst stretches of his career.

Looking specifically at the xGF numbers only one or maybe two of the pairings ahead of them played against top competition like Muzzin and Holl did, and even then they both started their shifts in the offensive end a lot more frequently. Did a quicker glance at the pairings ahead of them in CF% and it looks like you could say the same thing there. I do agree that it's likely Muzzin did most of the heavy lifting here but that pairing was easily the best shutdown/match-up pairing we've had in years

I'm not saying that if an upgrade for Holl becomes available that we shouldn't take it (I literally suggested that a couple posts up) but if we go into next season with that pairing still in tact I don't think it will be a problem for our defence. Right now the biggest issue is finding a partner for Rielly, and I feel like we've been saying that ever since he started playing. And finding a guy who "fits" is more important than making sure that guy is some elite all-star. That's why someone like Brodie just makes so much sense given his track record playing with a guy who plays a very similar style to Rielly in Giordano.

What about: :)

Gardiner - Rielly
Muzzin - Holl
Dermott - Lehtonen
Sandin - Marincin
Haha, nice joke. What about Branden Dillon for a 3rd pair guy? What about Luke Schenn for a 7th guy? I'd take Brodie and ???. Pietrangelo according to Dreger is going to cost 9+mill. Don't see the Leafs going after him. I think they'd go after 2 guys instead.
