2020-2021 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Heiskenen, Makar, or Q. Hughes, or even a Tkachuk, I would heavily consider. But the Venn diagram of teams with players I want to get for Marner, teams that desperately need Marner, and teams that can take on the contract are discrete circles, except for Toronto, ironically, who fits the bill for all three AND has Marner.

Yeah, and really all I'm trying to do here is actually find a team and a trade that would be workable and reasonable at the same time.

Well, if you discount Dubas saying Marner won't be traded, then I guess a good fit would be  franchise defencemen at the beginning of their careers, already producing an an elite level. We're not talking about moving a guy like Kapanen that can be filled internally or through FA... you have to get a comparable player for the talent and future you're giving up. I doubt there's a lot of teams with that asset looking to swipe right unless there was some bizarre set of circumstances at play - including the leafs.

Yeah, I'm not so sure about that.

The younger assets are nice during their cost controlled years, but this team needs some proven players to get them into the playoffs more comfortably, and then get past a round.

Removing Marner, although a big blow to the stacked offense of this team, gives you $11m in cap space.  That alone will afford you a couple of really nice pieces, even if the return on the trade isn't as monumental as you're hoping it could be.  I'd be happy with a few of the deals discussed in the thread.

And I don't think Dubas has any business telling anyone on the roster that they won't be traded.

Dubas and Shanny would have sold the board on firing Babcock with the years and tens of millions remaining on his contract because they weren't improving...and Keefe was going to make that happen.  It didn't happen...luckily for Dubas, it really doesn't matter this year because there isn't any playoff revenue to be gained anyways.

But make no mistake, this team is going to have to do something a little more drastic than moving Kapanen if they want to see some real improvement.  I don't think anyone not named Tavares or Matthews should be signing any lease extensions on their apartments.

I would like to see Dubas go after Kuemper from the Yotes. I think he's a better goalie and is 500K cheaper and is signed for 2 years. Yotes have no picks in the first 3 rounds this season so maybe there's a fit there.
And 7 more years of Karlsson at 11.5 mill, no thanks. A Seth Jones would be a different conversation.
As for Dubas saying Marner won't get traded. Its nonsense. If the right deal comes along, anyone and everyone that doesn't have a NMC is up for grabs.

Dahlen, Makar, Quinn Hughes ...

It sounds like we are hoping for a trade in which we get a player as valuable as Marner who costs less.  But no team is going to make that trade with us.  What do they get out of it?

The only way I can imagine something working out would be we gain through free agency and then we knowingly sell off Marner at a clear loss to make the cap work.

For instance, we sign Pietrangelo to $9/year and then we sell off Marner for picks, prospects and perhaps a good-not-great NHLer on a much cheaper contract.  In a vacuum, Marner's significantly more valuable than the picks, prospects and middling skaters (inducing the other team to make the trade with us), but perhaps the team as a whole gets better in the shorter and longer term thanks to the presence of Pietrangelo, the Marner haul, his freed-up cap space and the rejuvenated prospect base.  This is essentially what Edmonton tried to do with Hall/Larsson/Lucic but I'm not sure they liked the results.

Of course, if I had to guess, Pietrangelo will be signing in St Louis.  The chances of something like this happening are probably miniscule.

Wayne Simmonds joins Bruce Boudreau in making overtures to the Leafs via the media.

Simmonds is an interesting player. For a minimum contract I think he'd be a better fit then Clifford and not cost us a 2nd. He did get 5 PP goals last year. Def would add some toughness

Definitely depends how cheap he comes in at.

I'd be interested too but have to think he comes in at more than league minimum. Maybe he'll take less to stay closer to home, especially during what's bound to be a strange season. But otherwise he'd likely only be an option if our attempts to sign defencemen go bad.

Hyman-Matthews-Nylander
Mikheyev-Tavares-Marner
Robertson-Thornton-Simmonds
Barabanov-Spezza-Perry

It might not be good, but it'd be fun.

I'm surprised he's 32.  I thought he was much older for some reason.

Dear god, if he was much older I'd be much older and we can't have that!  ;D

You and Simmonds are both over the hill, unlike me and Muzzin.

If that's over the hill, where does it put me and Dubas?

I know it's just for fun, but a big no to Perry.

Have to agree if we're being a lil serious. I'd rather have Kerfoot if we could swing it cap wise.

I don't know. Perry doesn't have the best reputation, but, he'd bring a physical element to the team that it desperately needs. On a cheap deal, with 4th line minutes, I think he could be a useful addition.
