2021-2022 NHL Thread

Pretty surprised that Kadri remains unsigned and it's the end of July already. There can't be many teams left who could even fit him into their cap even if he comes down from what were presumably initially overly ambitious salary/term demands. I wonder if he ends up having to sign a cheap 1-year deal just to have somewhere to play this season which I suppose would also give him a chance to prove that last season wasn't quite so much of an anomaly. Can't imagine he'd end up not playing somewhere.

If he has to settle for a cheap 1 year deal but hyman can get 7 years at 5 mil per than the nhl is even more bush league than I give it credit for.

There are quite a few teams with cap space and, not coincidentally I'd imagine, they're the teams most often rumoured to be interested. Detroit, Calgary, NYI and New Jersey all have at least 8.5 in room with teams like Buffalo, Phoenix, Anaheim, Dallas and Chicago with as much or not more.

I think it's less likely that Kadri is being unreasonable with his demands or that nobody is interested in him and more likely that a team without cap space that he prefers has told him they're going to try to free up some to make room for him.

I'm not sure why it makes the NHL "bush league"

Ok forget that term. A garbage league? A badly run league? A league run by a bunch of idiot gms and owners?

If I was Kadri, I?ve either pushed for too much and teams are just not going there or my agent has grossly underestimated his value and/or demand. Assuming of course he has little interest in playing for the weaker teams and is holding out for cap space to be created on a good team.

I just don?t know how dragging this into August is a good move.

Why do I have the feeling that if Kadri's name was Gordie McClark from Sask he would have already signed a huge 7 year monster deal?

While I won't disagree with any of that, I'm still not sure how Kadri not signing a long term contract yet has to do with the above assessment of the league.

IF Kadri is indeed holding out for the right deal, from the right team, is it not him that has painted himself into a corner?

I get what you?re saying. There?s 2 possible scenarios here I suppose, Kadri is holding out for something very specific and may have painted himself into a corner or GMs aren?t willing to go big or long term with Kadri.

My mini rant is based on the latter scenario.

I also see where you're coming from. It just doesn't smell like that to me. Kadri is a very vocal person when he feels he's being treated unfairly. I don't know that there's been much rumbling from his camp that he wasn't being respected or offered a just amount.

*Just read a rumour that he's going to the Islanders. If he was looking for a team that is going to have a shot at the cup, I'm not sure that's the place to go.

I think this is mostly on Kadri. I think he just waited too long to make a decision and saw the teams he wanted to go to made other moves and don?t have cap space anymore. I think the same thing happened with Klingberg, and that?s why he ended up on a one year deal.

There's no evidence whatsoever that Kadri is in anyway unhappy with how this is going so I don't see why we're trying to figure out "who's to blame"? For all we know his wait might cause a team like Detroit or NYI to improve their offer.

I don?t know if Kadri?s preference is to stay in Colorado or not. But you?ve got to love a league that has made it very difficult to impossible to keep a group of talented players together.

But the league has Arizona to prop up, so yay.

I kinda enjoy the level of player movement. Makes things a little less predictable. But, I am part of team chaos, so?

I don?t mind movement if that?s what the player wants, but I have to believe that many of the cases of player movement are due to the team not being able to provide ?market value? under the cap. And on top of that you have teams dumping players in other teams to either be cap compliant or to fit someone new under the cap.

This isn?t fun.

I'm team luxury tax so I'm in agreement.

Yeah, the difference between the level of player movement in the NHL and player movement in the NBA is the NBA you tend to see player driven movement that results in fans, regardless of who they're fans of, being excited about watching a different team next year.

In the NHL, players move despite the fact their team and the player both don't want to and it makes exciting teams less interesting to watch.

Overall, to me it looks like the cap has cut down tremendously on the amount of player movement.  These days, there is almost no player movement during the season (except, in the grand scheme of things, a relatively small amount of movement prior to the deadline).  For example, when things are going poorly for a team at the beginning of the season, they usually have very few options for making a trade.  Even in the off-season, most teams can do relatively little to change up their team.  Sure a small handful of teams can sign a couple of interesting free agents, though a ?splash? is often just one guy (Eg Gaudreau) but that doesn?t usually move the needle all that much.  Most teams can only tweak around the edges.

Anyway, the salary cap is obviously a huge negative for fans of most teams and especially terrible for leaf fans.  It is there for the owner?s sake, fans be damned.
