2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Either that bug is still making it's way around the team or this is just a nice little pay bonus for Hollowell or TRADESZS?!!? (probably one of the first two things)

GET IN MA BELLY on our roster!
I would love Garland on the Leafs and we'll take Schenn as well.

Garlands salary for next year seems too high.

Why do people want schenn?  He?s worse than players we already have.

Fact that made me go "no way" today: Bunting (38 in 54 games) has more 5-on-5 points this season than McDavid (35 in 53 games).

Also, Kerfoot trails McDavid by just 4 5-on-5 points despite McDavid playing almost 200 more 5-on-5 minutes.

Looks like McDavid has 79 points and 31 power-play points which makes 48 even strength points ? unless he has 10 short handed and/or 4-on-4/3-on-3 points ? really? ? 41 non-even strength points in 54 games?

79 total points
35 5-on-5 points
2 4-on-4 points
2 3-on-3 points
31 powerplay points
0 shorthanded points
8 points AGAINST empty net
1 point WITH empty net

I got one of my wishes, Robertson getting a shot to help energize J.T and Willie Boy.
Some other things on my wish list, would like to see Lyubushkin with Rielly.  I don't see the Liljegren  experiment working any better than Sandin managed the other night.  Pair Brodie with Holl and keep the Swedish lads together as the 3rd pair.
Engvall has been playing well and should be kept on the 3rd line.
Which brings me to the 4th line;  Kerfoot is there today, but Spezza and Simmonds have been non factors in recent games.  Perhaps Senney or Steeves deserves a call up and see if we can get the 4th line producing more.  Also Kallgren deserves a look, he  has been playing very well and probably will be just as good as Mzarek or a non rejuvenated Campbell.

Not criticizing, but if we have to hope that Kallgren will become our Jordan Binnington that's a pretty narrow bridge to cross over another Chasm of Playoff Failure.

Would you say that it is a bridge too far?

Not saying Kallgren will be our saviour at all, but worth giving him a game or two and seeing what he does.

If what he does though is stop the puck, then questions are going to start to be asked.

Glad to see him move up but don't get burying Kerfoot on the 4th line. I guess that's Keefe's accountability for Tavares and Nylander sucking a**.

Garland leads Van in 5v5 goals and points. Also leads them in goals, points per 60 at 5v5. Leads them in +/- at +14. 28 of his 31 pts come at 5v5. He's a pain to play against and would be a great fit with JT.
As for Schenn, purely a depth type acquisition and gives a different look to the D, like Bogo did last season. He clears the net and hits. Leads Van in hits by 50. Muzz leads the Leafs D with 84 hits. Schenn has 171. He's only taken 6 minor penalties so far, plays 17 mins a game.

Two of my favourite metrics when assessing defensemen is relative on-ice sv% and relative corsi.  While Schenn doesn't play hard minutes (averages 17 minutes a game of ice time, which would put him around 6th on the team), his stats are pretty good.  He has an 5v5 on-ice sv% of .939, and Vancouver as a team is .935, so he has positive impacts on his goalie's save percentage.

This chart is a little outdated as I did it a couple weeks ago (before the Lyubushkin trade), but here's all the rumoured available D-men in oi-Sv%-rel vs rel-Corsi.

That said - when Dubas pulled the trigger on Lyubushkin, I think Schenn no longer became an option.  They need someone for the top 4.  I'm curious to see what Anaheim does, as they're currently only 3 points out of a playoff spot, and have both Manson and Lindholm who are UFAs.

As long as he doesn't imitate Vesa "The Beachball"Toskala

Wow. Do you have this kind of breakdown for Matthews? Curious how it compares.
