2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

ESPN graded every team's off-season to date. Leafs get a B- and a write up that amounts to "lots of changes but improvements?"

I hear a lot of "where is the improvement" stuff, and while I would never complain about the team improving, they hit 115 points last year. Keeping the team where they are (which is tough with Salary Cap garbage) isn't a bad thing. That's without considering they have the rest of the off-season and the regular season to improve still. So they may very well be improved by playoffs.

The Blue Jackets announced on Friday afternoon that they have traded 27-year-old Oliver Bjorkstrand to the Seattle Kraken for a pair of draft picks (2023 3rd, 2024 4th). Obviously, the initial reaction to this deal in any Leafs fan's mind is "why wasn't Kyle Dubas all over this deal?". Well, it is worth noting that Bjorkstrand did have a modified NTC that allowed him to submit a 10-team no-trade list. There is some early speculation that Bjorkstrand did not wish to play in Canada.

Yeah, also his cap hit is $5.4M.

Just eyeballing that graph, there aren?t any surprises with the Leafs.

Good at rush defense also doesn't necessarily mean good at cycle-breaking defense or crease clearance.

Still thinking about the things Milano and Nylander could pull off while Tavares smiles at them from the corner boards.

There were 89 playoff games played this past post season and although he only played 5 of those games, Justin Holl was in fact an elite rush defenseman in those games. Dimitri Filipovic tracked all 89 games and 5-on-5 zone entry defense.

In his 5 games, Holl was far and away the Leafs' top zone entry defender and Morgan Reilly was by far the Leafs' worst. Timothy Liljegren, Jake Muzzin, TJ Brodie and Ilya Lyubushkin were all in the same quadrant as Holl as being "elite" in defending zone entries and forcing dump-ins and Mark Giordano was also good.

For perspective, Holl forced a dump-in 40% of the time and broke up 22% of entries while Reilly only broke up 8% of entries and allowed Tampa to carry the puck into the zone 72% of the time.

None of this surprises me, what does surprise me is that TO extended him for so long at so much?

If I'm reading that chart right it looks like the Norris trophy winner broke up even fewer zone entries than Rielly.

Do any of these ratings sites have cred? +/- has been crapped on for years but it is straight forward, the rest, who are these people, why are so many so willing to to discount obvious nonbias stats and embrace such true crap?

If anyone is feeling down about the offseason so far (haha why), I'm circling the 2026-27* season when the Leafs centre depth is
Matthews (16M)
McDavid (16M)
Minten (ELC)
Tavares (800k)

* assuming we haven't become extinct

Maybe not extinct.  But it might be too hot for ice.

Salming was always one of my favorites.  Damn brutal news.  Hope things can go well for him. :(
