Guess who shows up in this article about dangerous passers

He might start the season on the Marlies, depending on how the cap situation is sorted out.

Nah. They'll just risk Lafferty on waivers before demoting Knies.

This article does do a really good job explaining why the Kampf signing makes no sense to me. He's basically too good (or at least too expensive) to play 4th line minutes with Reaves but not good enough to play 3rd line minutes with Knies or Domi.

I was looking through some options for who the Leafs could possibly sign if they needed to replace Lafferty with a league minimum guy and I didn't even realize until today that Jujhar Khaira was an UFA. I always liked him back when he was an Oiler. 6'4, 212 lbs centre, ok skater, hits, kills penalties, serviceable at face-offs. Treliving surely knows him well from all the Edmonton-Calgary match-ups he was a part of.

There might be "better" options available (Pius Suter, hello) but I think with the Leafs having Reaves as a staple on the 4th line they may as well fully commit to that line being one with a physical identity and something like McMann-Khaira-Reaves would certainly provide that.

But is Kampf good enough to play on a line with Nylander and Domi? I say yes, or at least let's find out.

I suspect they panicked or blinked when O'Reilly went to Nashville.
It was UFA musical centers and they didn't want to be left standing with nothing when that music stopped.
I wasn't thrilled with the signing either.

I've wondered whether O'Reilly moved on in part because he didn't want to tussle for 2nd line center with Tavares - out of respect for him.

I'm still bothered by the Klingberg signing as well because of the money and we don't have a physical PK dman - which was one thing Holl (& Schenn) was decent at. Having said that, it is not easy to be firm in that criticism because the lack of that kind of a dman - which has been a staple on Treliving's teams - suggests this roster is still a work in progress.

They have 48 hours to buy out Murray - if they want to and are able with his health. So we might get some answers soon.

What's going on? Can we or can't we buy out Murray?

If we can buy out Murray, do it and trade Brodie and bring in a rugged D-man.

Spoiler: he says buy out Murray and trade Jarnkrok.  My takeaway from all the scenario-spinning is that the Leafs are going to be leaning very heavily on Knies, he of a handful of NHL games' worth of experience.

It would be very helpful if Nicky Bobby could get his ship together and finally launch it.

Can the Leafs do something like trade Murray to Arizona for Bryan Little and Jakob Voracek? Voracek and Little are owed $7.5m and 3.75m in actual money this coming season (no clue what the insurance parameters are) and Murray would give them someone they can actually put on the ice this year.

The buyout window opens 72 hours after the arbitrator ruling so we wouldn't be able to buy him out until Wednesday or Thursday

And if it happens we'll likely learn of the news around waiver time, since he needs to be placed on unconditional waivers to start the process. So hit the refresh button around noon for the next couple days.

Check out the shooting clips in this second article. I like the philosophy behind his shot selection: no muss, no fuss, usually aggressively attacking the (slower) mid/high-blocker side.

Just pulling these in here from the draft thread, among some follow up highlights from today?s announcement.

I know his playoff struggles are well documented but I'm still pretty surprised to see Tatar kicking around in mid-August and potentially relying on a PTO to find a team for this upcoming season. If the Leafs do pull a trigger on a Jarnkrok trade for cap/roster flexibility he'd be the one UFA I'd see as a suitable replacement (at potentially almost half the cost).

We're a month away from training camps opening and some PTOs are starting to get announced. I'd fully expect Treliving to have one or two or maybe even more of them considering he's generally extended a number of those throughout his time in Calgary.

On defence I could see one of Simon Benoit or Scott Harrington showing up. Both physical, shot blocking defencemen that I'm sure Treliving's tried to find better versions of during the offseason but hasn't. If Timmins can't make the team for cap reasons one of them would be fine 7D options that could also give Gio a break when needed.

At forward I've mentioned interest in Jujhar Khaira before. If Lafferty needs to go on waivers for cap purposes then Khaira could be a good PTO to have as a possible replacement. I also like Tyler Motte as a possibility to have around in case McMann and Holmberg don't look like fits on a 4th line with Reaves. The Leafs reportedly showed interest in Josh Bailey at the beginning of free agency but that obviously cooled off after the Bertuzzi and Domi signings. But as a PTO who can fill the veteran requirement in preseason games I wouldn't mind throwing him a camp opportunity.

Reminder: /theAthletic
?My favourite thing on a day-to-day basis about Will is how late he comes into the rink and doesn?t get stressed,? said Alex Kerfoot. ?He gets dressed in two minutes. He?s got his AirPods in and it never looks like he?s rushing. Everyone else is out in the hall, and Will just comes in, grabs some gum, grabs some tape and the next thing you know, he?s ready to go.?

There were times early in Kerfoot?s Leafs tenure when he grew anxious about his teammate. But now he knows Nylander ?has got it down to a science.?

?He?s the last one here, but he?s never late. He?s always right on time,? said Calle Jarnkrok of Nylander?s arrival to meetings, for example.
