2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Leafs are signing Webber and it looks like he is join the big team for the last two games.  The article in the Athletic making it seem like he may see some game action and if he does well, maybe even time in the playoffs. Wow. I thought this guy would go to the Marlie's and season there for bit.

Thanks for that CTB.  Is he worth it?  What I remember when his name popped up is that he is big and good at blocking shots and that's about it.

Who knows. My gut instinct at first was that there almost certainly wasn't anything here. But since then James Mirtle has said a couple of times that he's heard people say there's a good chance he actually plays NHL games at some point next season and presumably those are people who have watched him closely.

To Toronto's credit they've been reasonably successful when it comes to college players in this position. Either in acquiring guys prior to them becoming free agents (like Hyman) or signing them when they do (Moore, Marchmentnot from the college, McMann, Steeves-ish, possibly Rifai). So maybe he can end up being something, even if the upside would likely be quite limited.

That's of course the optimistic take. The pessimistic one would reasonably point out his zero goals and 15 assists through 4 years of college hockey make it incredibly difficult to see a NHL future and any talk about him is more simply because he's 6'7" tall.

I appreciate the response.  You can't teach size.  (You can teach cliches, however, as I've just demonstrated.)

So Cory Cross with less talent?

Nice reference...fun fact Corey Cross is 53 years old!

what are the Cap considerations if Murray does come back?  Is it even possible?

He's starting for the Marlies, so yes it is very possible now. Will it happen? Who knows, but yes it is now very possible.

They'd need to move about 4.2M to make room. Not happening. He'll do his LTIR conditoning stint with the Marlies and be activated after the reg season is over. Like Jarnkrok

Anyone else but me concerned that both our goalies suck now a week before the playoffs?? Martin Jones or Matt Murray anyone??

Not really. Sammy's been on a heater and last night he really only let in 1 bad goal when the team was playing like they didn't care. To say he sucks is an overreaction imo. Woll was very good his last game and while inconsistent since coming back from injury we know he has the tools.
As for Jones and Murray. Murray has just played his 1st gane in a year and Jones hasn't played for a while. I think Murray will play again for the Marliea and maybe Jones gets in a game this week. If they were better options, they'll use them but by use, it doesn't seem that's the case.

Very. But Jones or Murray are not safer options. Hopefully someone figures it out or it will be a short spring.

Sammy has given up 11 goals in his last 2 starts, I'd disagree there was only 1 bad goal in there.

Woll has been super inconsistent since coming back, one great game against Carolina and the rest average to bad. I hope someone figures it out.

I was referring to last night's game. He played very well after the 1st period as did the team. We'll see what happens in the next 2 games.

I don't think we know what Sammy we're going to get until game 1 of the playoffs.

True, as a Leafs fan I hope for the best but as usual expect the worst. This team has really ground me down

One thing that really intrigued me is why can't the Leafs have both goalies on hot streaks ?
Why Sammy has to be awful to Wool to shine ? and Vice versa.

I just want a hot goalie shuting down the net in a playoff series for a change.

Injuries sort of hamper this

If we're forced to put Marner with Matthews for a stretch, then I'd like to see Tavares with some heavy wingers to just muck it up. Any grouping of McMann, Knies, Jarnkrok, and even Bertuzzi should work for some lunch pail hockey with abnormal shooting talent.

Wonder if that Cade Webber signing wasn't as finalized as originally reported.

Also possible, or likely, that the McMann and Domi injuries threw a wrench into those plans since they complicate things cap wise.
