2024-25 NHL Thread

I watch lots of hockey. 3 fantasy hockey leagues contribute to me watching my players from different teams. I am always watching the scores and will channel surf toward the end of games. Sportsnet Premium subscription has a decent amount of out-of-town games. Late-night western hockey games for whatever reason seem faster and heavier and overall better to watch than the soft east finesse hockey.

Wait. So you get full service by default? Who says New Jersey is a dump?!

You pay extra for the mandatory full service. It is apparently for fire safety reasons and New Jersey is the last state left hanging onto this law.

Just a random musing, but how much non-Leafs NHL hockey would people watch?

I try to catch every Leaf game. On off days, if I don't have another tv series or movie on the go, I might throw on a game from, in order of priority: but they're relatively rare
[*] prominent Leafs prospect in junior (Cowan last year, Danford this year)
[*] Marlies (but they're weird hours)
[*] one of our division rivals (FLA) or marquee matchup (McDavid vs).

Most of my other team viewings are from the twitter highlights more than anything.

I was stopped at a gas station in Ohio a few weeks ago. The gentleman in the car behind me with NJ plates was sitting in the driver seat waiting. When he finally got out he was very annoyed that someone didn't come out to pump his gas.

I live in the infamous state of NJ.  I find the gas pump and kind of convenient. I'm pretty used to it.

I have tried hard to watch other teams in the area like the Flyers, Rangers, Devils so I can have a local team to root for.  But I instantaneously get jealous/mad/unhappy when I try to form an attachment to a team other than the Leafs.  Just haven't been able to do it.  Damn you Roenick for cross-checking Mogilny in the face back in 2004 or whenever it was ... so hard to forget that and root for the flyer.

I was hoping you'd chime in but I don't know how to use the bat-signal here.

People who think NJ is a dump have never been there.  There are a lot of beautiful places.  Mind you, I wouldn't want to live there but it's not because it's uniformly ugly.

If the Leafs folded or disbanded, I would no longer NHL watch hockey. I watch every Leaf game.

Yeah, if my team here folded or disbanded I?d definitely not go see local hockey. If the Leafs disappeared though I do feel I?d probably watch NHL and potentially end up with an affinity elsewhere at some stage. Maybe not though. But it?s something I?m fairly confident I won?t need to worry about 😃

I watch the highlights every day, and keep good tabs on most teams comings and goings.

This is my intention at the start of most seasons, but it generally ends up being catching key things this way

Thanks for the replies. Always thought the Team fan v hockey fan discussion can be interesting. I imagine it?s skewed a bit more on here where we tend to be a bit more invested than the casual!

It's a joke that tons of people have used in the past. Anyway there's a reason why it's the garden state.

That?s very not good; Stutzle is okay though, so Xhekaj will likely just receive another gofundme.

Just a random musing, but how much non-Leafs NHL hockey would people watch? Like in terms of the NHL I?m very much a Leafs fan who likes the game of hockey, and if I?m in a city where hockey is on I?ll try and take in a game (I?ve been lucky to catch games in Boston, New York, DC, New Jersey, Stockholm non of which involved the Leafs).

But I?ll often sit down on a Sunday evening, say, and I?ll stick on a game between Columbus and Minnesota. But I find that actually I?m not watching or switch it off.

Even the likes of NHL today with the highlights maybe the first couple of weeks of the season I?ll watch but then I could go weeks without looking at another NHL game/team.

(Obviously I watch another non NHL team, but even then I would rarely watch other games in the British league or even highlights of other games)

Honestly, I'd say the last few years, I've watched more non-Leaf games than I have ever have, and less Leaf games than I ever have.

I'd say due to a few factors.  Me not digging this Leafs team and its constituents like previous teams.  Fantasy hockey.  McDavid.  My son wanting to watch other teams/games.  Leaf games not being generally overly entertaining.

Maybe it's just age, or just finally coming to my senses, but the days of me going out of my way and missing whatever I have to do for a Leaf game are over.  If I miss going to my own game let's say, to sit at home only for the Leafs to have a dud of a game, I get choked.  Not giving up my own stuff to potentially watch a dud or boring ass game...one that I have no control on.

This I definitely empathise with. Though for me it was choosing to miss sleep with the games facing off at midnight, finishing around 3am and me getting up around 7am for work 😂 There were definitely seasons where I managed to watch 60+ Leafs games. I couldn?t physically or mentally do that now!

In terms of the Leafs really only Saturday games when I can lie in on a Sunday morning allow me to do that. Which is why I think I watch more of the Sunday matinee games as they face off anywhere between 5-10pm so are generally done by the time I would be ready to sleep.

But watching games delayed or recorded doesn?t feel the same as watching ?live?.

That has to be a 8-10 game suspension. 2 days after being fined he's pulling that sh*t?

Primary contact (seen in a different view) was the chest. Stutzle?s own stick hit him in the face. But clearly the chicken wing indicates what the intent was.

This was in response to a late hit Ridly Greig applied to Kirby Dach earlier.

Left his feet, chicken wing. All on an unsuspecting player. Stutzle is lucky he hit chest and not chin.

If PK Subban is going to throw a fit over Laine getting hit and the NHL's need to protect the star players (Laine as a star is a big stretch), then he better be screaming from the roof tops about Xhekaj just tried to do.

Grieg's was a clean check to the chest, but it was to an unsuspecting player because Dach was no eligible to be hit several seconds after dishing off the puck.

The Leafs have to deal with 8 games against these chuckleheads.

Well, picking up again on how much non Leafs hockey do you watch. This could help to watch more

Both dangerous plays that really have no place in hockey.

I suppose my biggest issue with Xh(tired of looking up how to spell his name) is that they(the NHL) literally could have suspended him two days before this incidence? How jumping, and pummeling an unwilling combatant is not a suspension is beyond me.
