There's a huge difference between training on your own and training with NHL players, coaches, etc. It's not even in the same universe. He was still doing the kinds of things everyone was doing all summer, while the rest of the league had moved on to team practices, game situations, etc. That left him weeks behind. The fact is Swayman has played 14 games and has been with the team for a month and a half. This isn't a missed training camp thing, this is a struggle to find his game thing and add in the team is not that good defensively. And he's not weeks behind shooters. He wasn't sitting at home with his feet up.
Also, part of the reason he's struggling to find his game is that he started out behind. It's awfully hard to find your game in season as a goaltender, as we've seen time and time again. There are other factors at play, sure, but missing training camp is a hugely significant one.
