2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

This is something I didn't expect to see though it reinforced my feelings that the Leafs have improved their goaltending

Ranking by Kevin Woodley ? In-Goal Magazine

Here's his reasoning (20 min audio)

I think it is the most unpredictable position in hockey in drafting and development and can be from season to season. So I can't embrace "the Leafs tandem is the best in the Atlantic". I don't feel qualified to make such a claim or defend it. It can be a nuts position to predict.

But I also feel they're better. Woll has worked on fitness to reduce injuries. Stolarz is coming off a Cup win and looked decent. Murray (if he clears waivers) has looked good in his recovery from hip surgery. Hildeby, coming of a good 1st season in the AHL, has looked good in preseason. They only need one of those guys to really shine. That is bolstered by some improvement in the D with the addition of Tanev, OEL and the young guys with another year of experience.
Good new because the Leafs have more back-to-back games this year than anyone other team.

Happy ?[Forkin?] shoot it. Stop [forkin?] crying, bro? eve for those that celebrate.

The Athletic's season preview ranks the Leafs in the top 2 and the team to beat in the Atlantic and potentially the Eastern conference, as other contenders took some significant personnel losses in the offseason, while Toronto largely treaded water up front and bolstered their back end.

Meanwhile, hockeyviz's updated model places the Leafs tied for second in the Atlantic

I'm honestly not all that concerned if we lose Murray.  I'd obviously rather have more goaltending depth but I think Hildeby is due for an opportunity.  He had a strong year last year.  He looked fine in preseason.  Maybe a few lucky rolls of the puck but that's what having a big body helps with.

Here. We. Go.

See below for Pacioretty's numbers.
Lorentz is at league min: 775k
Webber is at 825K AAV starting 2025-26, similar to Rifai but a bit higher to sneak him through waivers next year. Two-way deal converts to a one-way in 2026-27.

Do we need to lose anyone or can we hide enough on the LTIR?

LTIR: Dewar/Hakanpaa/Jankrok?

If all 3 are on LTIR they won't need to lose anyone. Well at least not until people start to get healthy. We'll see if that's what ends up happening later today. Jarnkrok's injury certainly didn't seem LTIR-bad but anything can happen I guess.

If Jarnkrok isn't on LTIR they would need to clear about $900k I believe, so Timmins would have to go down.

Double checked and this seems true. It's why Pacioretty got such a specific contract number and must also confirm that Jarnkrok is LTIR-bound.

Patches should complain and get that extra $1

By the time the LTIRs get healthy, a team comprised of Tanev, Ekman-Larsson, Reaves, Woll, Stolarz, Murray, McMann, and Robertson are likely going to have other LTIR candidates.

At this point the only question is who's in the press box for game 1. Berube seems to love the Lorentz-Kampf-Reaves 4th line, that means there's only room for 2 of Robertson, McMann, and Pacioretty on the 3rd line. One has to sit. And of course on D is Liljegren going to start as a healthy scratch?

Well early indication is that McMann and Lily will sit game 1.

It would be fair to say the two of them had meh to middling camp showings compared to Robertson/Lorentz/Holmberg/Timmins.

I suspect McMann will swap in over Pacioretty after game one since it's a B2B and game one is vs Pacioretty's old team, and game 2 is against a faster Devils squad well rested since coming home from Prague.

Yeah I mean I'm not going to get too worked up over the game 1 line-up but McMann should be playing every game he can. He's definitely a top-9 forward and arguably the 7th best one in my books. Really the issue is having Holmberg at 3C causes too much of a logjam up front. If the Willy thing is over they should be trying Domi there instead, that opens up a top-9 W for all of McMann, Robertson, and Pacioretty.

Roughly they average 29 years old which would make them about 8th oldest in the league (compared with 2023-24 team ages). Canes & Stars were the only decent older teams last year - 5 of the 8 oldest made the playoffs.

Their D averages more than that ~30.x. With their contracts for the D and shallow prospects for the D position, that is going to be their toughest challenge to remain competitive over the next 4 years.

Going forward, LTIR is a way of life for them. They'll need more depth for the playoffs as the older guys get injured more frequently.

Let's see how Holmberg at 3C goes. Tre was speaking with Mike Johnson and MJ said Tre went on about Holmberg that was unprovoked. I think Holmberg had a very good camp and hopefully he can start coming into his own this season.

I wonder if the Willy/Domi 3C plan was waylaid by Jarnkrok's persistent injury.

McMann-Holmberg-Robertson was the Marlies top line for a brief spell when Robertson started the season in the AHL previously.
