Wouldn't be shocked if of this bunch only the first 3 names were given qualifying offers. I'd probably toss one to Steeves as well.

Keith Pelley in rather than out (thanks for setting this up though).

thanks for the catch! My editor is asleep at the wheel.

I actually don't know about Steeves (and Ellis) getting anything. Treliving isn't against having shorties (historically), but he has let a few of these prospects go recently (Lisowsky, traded Ovchinnikov, etc).

Outside of Dewar, I think the other NHL-grade RFAs are trade bait (to pad a bigger deal) or just minimum QOs. They probably go shopping on the DNQ list from the rest of the league though, a la Simon Benoit.

DNQ's and the surprise bought out guys have generally been some of the best value signings in the league the past few years. So yeah whoever shakes loose from those groups could change what the team does.

One man's trash is another's treasure.

Yup. A lot of these guys are still valuable pieces, it's more that, due to QOs or existing contracts, they're usually just set to earn more than their teams feel they can justify for those contributions. They almost inevitably sign for significantly less than what it would require teams to retain them. You're not going to find a lot of significant contributors, but lots of good depth and guys who can excel in less prominent roles.

Me too.
I might have qualified LaJoie for depth but with the number of UFA dmen, probably not. Probably better to stick another line in the dman UFA pond to see what they might catch.

Robertson doesn't have arbitration rights so he should remain 'economical'

Liljegren has arbitration rights and I have a feeling he'll do better there than the Leafs would like to pay him. If they load up with two right handed UFA dmen, they probably won't be able to afford the arbitration outcome under their cap.

The others have arbitration rights but I'm not very concerned about those.

Finding another RH Benoit & McMann would go a long way towards helping the roster fit under the cap.

Crazy to think he was hired by the team way back in 2018. Smart guy, but even before Treliving was hired it felt like his role in hockey ops was starting to get reduced so this isn't all that surprising or noteworthy even.

I think he was largely hired for stickhandling the expansion draft(s). My guess would be Doan takes over most of his portfolio.

If only they spent as much on supply chain QA as they did for this contract and rollout?

edit: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5583821/2024/06/26/fanatics-nhl-jerseys/
Apparently the MLB jersey debacle was in issue at the specification level (i.e. Nike's decisions just prior to handing off the workload and branding). No such issue with the NHL ones.

The only difference between this jersey and the Adidas jerseys worn in the NHL for the past seven seasons is the removal of the Adidas shoulder dimples (?debossing? in industry parlance) for a more traditional look, an upgraded NHL shield with a hologram finish, and a reinforcement of the lower forearm to address players? concerns about ?board burn,? wear and tear caused by collisions along the wall and standard board-battles. Well, that and the Fanatics logo sewn in above the name plate, replacing the Adidas logo.

The jerseys are still made by SP Apparels in the same hallowed Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, factory that has been making NHL jerseys for half a century. The quality is evident. There?ll be no hockey version of Jerseygate.

But the league wanted to be sure. The NHL Players? Association wanted to be sure. And Fanatics needed to be sure. The jerseys had been completed long before the baseball nightmare and had been taken to all 32 NHL locker rooms to be seen and felt and approved by all 32 head equipment managers and hundreds of players.

This came back up with all the jersey talk. I maintain that the Leafs should do this for every non-blue team they play against.

Am I a homer for thinking that was a great video?
