2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Like Klingberg, a bet that didn't pay off.
They wanted Klingberg off the roster because he stunk. They want Hakanpaa off the roster so they can go over the cap come playoffs and have him play. Both are victims of cap management for different reasons.

Maybe, but he did have a couple of goal-helping (but no assist credits) screens a couple of games ago.

herman's wishlist from the offseason coaching change
  • attack fast; don't wait for defensive setups
  • shoot for slot tips and rebounds
  • counter punch off the rush
i.e. play more like Nylander (offensively) and PK Marner, and less like even-strength/PP Marner

So far, the Leafs were basically allergic to rush attempts early in the season as they were focused on defensive improvements (also Matthews was dead). Now the leash is off (like Willy's dogs) as they work on offense generation and some of those tactical philosophies are working their way through the system and PP.

I rarely say this, but some good points here from Kypreos. Also not to say that it's entirely to blame for any and all playoff failures the Leafs have went through but I do think for years the team has hit a bit of a lull around this time of the year and onward when their playoff position is already basically decided. So to have a high level tournament among the leagues best players but also a still very competitive Atlantic division race to come back to afterward could end up being a bit of a benefit to the team in the long-run.

Kyper’s Korner
•It must feel good for Mitch Marner to hear that Connor McDavid made it clear to Team Canada he wants the Leafs star on his line at the 4 Nations Face-Off.

Well if he wants, McDavid knows there's one tangibly real way to make this happen on a longer term basis.

The team was concerned by what they were seeing, albeit also optimistic. Rielly wasn’t some soon-to-be 31-year-old in the midst of rapid physical decline. Rather, it seemed evident in his play that this was a struggle between the ears.

In other words, it was something that could be fixed.

[...]

The Leafs believed Rielly, trying to minimize risk to suit the preferences of first-year head coach Craig Berube, had swung too far the other way, removing too much risk from his game and losing something essential in the process.

Rielly agreed with that assessment. “At times, I think so,” he said. “But that’s no one’s fault but my own.”

Berube urged him to “just be aggressive and use your abilities.” Mistakes would happen.

Who has ever taken a discount to go to the oilers?
They got a beauty of a deal on Zach Hyman. But I think it was more Leafs let a Beauty deal slip through it's fingers.

I know it's not officially a "discount" because it didn't look like a discount when he signed but it's one of the best contracts in the NHL in retrospect.

He’s making more than Mathews. So is there something I’m missing here? How is more a discount?
4 years shorter term, I bet Matthews makes $10M more than Draisaitl over their 8-year contracts. 15% of $115M salary cap $17.25 which could be his next contract.

4 years shorter term, I bet Matthews makes at least $10M more then Draisaitl over the next 8 years.
As he should. In any case I still don’t see how that’s a discount, but I guess different perspectives and such.

Anyway I think what Matthews is doing is smart. He’s maximizing his earnings. The strategy has some risk, but I’m surprised more players don’t try it.

It's a $10M discount compared to his peer.
