2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Both those sites say the Leafs claimed Mermis off waivers on Jan 3rd and then sent him to the AHL Marlies
How does that work? Conditioning? Or they can do it because that was where he was going when they originally waived him and Utah picked him up? I'm not sure how they're doing that.
If the original team that placed him on waivers reclaims a player in the same season and no one else submits a claim, they can send him down to the AHL without requiring waivers.

Knies just had a $2m weekend. That hatty earned him an extra $250k x 8 in the negotiations.....

......just like Willy had when the franchise was reportedly capping his pay at $10m x 8.

Willy's ask was always Pasta money. Leafs either paid or moved on.

He's in the AHL because he cleared waivers the second time and only the Leafs made a claim so they were allowed to move forward with his demotion to the AHL. If the Leafs wanted to have him on the NHL roster they just had to be the first waiver priority to claim him but they needed all 30 teams to not claim him to put him in the AHL.

So he's depth for the depth. Marlies have 8 dmen with NHL contracts on top of the 8 dmen on the NHL roster (or LTIR/IR).
Out of those 16, we're having trouble finding 6 we like in the NHL lineup.

Nylander is second in the NHL in goals. Marner is second in assists.

Pretty crazy they don’t play on the same line.
Willy dropped to 3rd (4-way tie) in goals thanks to an empty netter by Rantanen last night. But yeah. It also just feels like those accomplishments have been very quietly achieved. Like Mitch is 4th in the entire league in points and I rarely see much about that.

Here's a weird stat I just noticed. Despite the fact that the Leafs overall PP is very much struggled all season long (18th in the league) Marner and Nylander are still right at the top of the powerplay points leaders. Kucherov and Hughes have 23 and 21 points respectively. Marner is then next with 20 alongside MacKinnon, Makar, and Necas. Then Willy has 19 alongside Point, Bratt, and Raymond. NJ has 2 players in the top-10 there and their PP is 2nd in the league. Tampa has 2 players as well and their PP is 3rd overall.
