2024 Blue Jays

I guess it was too good to be true.  Exciting to think about at least, before having our hearts crushed.

At least he is in the NL now.  Time for the real work to begin now.

Alas

All the embedded Japanese media (and their families) breathing a sigh of relief they don?t have to move to Toronto

Somebody big brained the leaks to Toronto and leveraged a huge new number out of the Dodgers.

Perfect time for the Leafs to announce an 8x10M deal for Nylander. No one will bat an eye at that number after this.

I mean it just seemed like such an unlikely scenario that he'd pull out of Socal to come to the Jays imo considering there were other options in Socal.

I think this might be true...whatever they did got to Morosi after all.

I'll never forget December 8th 2023!

Did the Angels win with Ohtani? 70M for 1 guy. Should be able to get enough guys to fill holes with less then that.

The concern on the Jays side is that the team said they had two budgets.  An Ohtani budget and another one.  Hopefully for the Jays it means they have the Ohtani money to fill a number of holes in the lineup and not a much smaller number.

LF, 4th OF/Springer fill in, 3B, DH need to be filled.  They also need to replace Hicks in the bullpen.

If they have 2 budgets then they're doomed and they really don't want to win.

There?s an Othani budget because Ohtani would?ve paid for himself and then some. Anyone else available with that kind of draw?

I have no issue with the "two budgets". It makes complete sense if the people making the financial decisions say "the only way we're going to that number is if we get Ohtani." Because, like Herman has said, Ohtani's merchandise and draw for tickets would cover whatever difference there is between the two budgets. The group is still willing to open their wallet....Just not quite as wide anymore.

I also wouldn?t be all that surprised if the difference between the two budgets was basically the premium it would have taken to sign Ohtani. The Jays had the 7th highest payroll in MLB last season, so it?s not like ownership is being super tight with the cash.

If the Jays are in an AL East Pennant race then they can make up for it. If they had Ohtani and performed like the Angels I think we'd be pissed off pretty quickly.

Not just Ohtani, but having Trout as well and never made the playoffs.

Baseball is very random and crazy.

Did Atkins or Shapiro actually say this? Because this does not sound like something they would publicly admit.

Allocated Ohtani $'s was only for him. That was more than a baseball budget. It was essentially a market share purchase. Since they didn't get him we can't assume they will spend anywhere near what they would have had they signed Ohtani. Without Ohtani potential revenues will be drastically lower even with other super stars.

Higher likelihood of playoff success, live off endorsements, rake in retirement, for the cost of upfront investment potential and getting dinged on inflation. But when you?re already comfortably wealthy?

It would be very Toronto sports to end up going from seeming to being picked by Ohtani to ending up not picking up any of the top end of free agents and losing Chapman thus ending up with a worse lineup than last seasons underperforming one.

So how do we feel about the Kiermaier deal?

I dunno. Ok, I guess. I like Kiermeier the player. He worked out in year 1. Doesn't move the needle a lot as a team. Still room to add Bellinger or Soler.

Edit: I see the Jays have also added Kiner-Falefa, today, as well. Not a huge needle mover but quality depth piece.
