2025-26 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Jan.24 Justa friendly reminder, 57 points is 3rd in the Atlantic this time last year and only 5 points back of where we were this time last year, seems crazy as bad as we've played this year but we're really not that far off of where we were...lol And that's my optimistic take of the day. ;)(y):)
The problem with that is it's a moot point. 57 points isn't going to cut it this year. So while 57 points would be good last year...it isn't this year.

As for cancelling practice l...so many guys are injured that I get it but man at some point maybe this team needs to actually do a practice because they kind of suck

Not to pile on, but 5 more points would really help them this year.

I think what it does highlight though is that the loss of Marner means that the Leafs can't out skill opponents anymore. On top of that, they were hoping for a more balanced lineup, which hasn't really happened yet, and because of that, we haven't seen them play with more consistency, which is what I think the goal was. I think the idea was that with more consistency, you wouldn't end up with these really awesome games in the playoffs, with these really poor games, at the worst possible time to boot. You'd have a better chance of smoothing out a playoff series, which in theory should increase your chances of winning.

In terms of making the playoffs, anything could still happen.
They're 5 pts out of a wildcard spot but only 2 pts ahead of 2nd last place in the conference.
Regardless, I don't see a Cup winner.
Prevailing question right now is "do they have the DNA to make the playoffs?"
Treliving has to hope so.

I wonder if the rush to get Stolarz in a game is if they're thinking of trading a goalie. With the Olympics break, there are not that many games left before the trade deadline.
Treliving is probably feeling a little nervous and limited in what he can offer.

The upcoming question might be "with the age of the roster, sparse prospect pipeline and few top picks, why would Matthews re-sign?"
He may yet wind up as trade fodder at the deadline if they don't snap out of it. But I doubt that happens on Treliving's watch.

They have soiled the sheets in a homestand that they needed to rack up some wins.

I wouldn't bet my last dime on it but right now I don't see them making the playoffs. And if they do, I don't see them going anywhere.

Matthews as trade fodder? That seems fanciful. Maybe it's something that gets broached this off-season if there's no plan to get this going in the right direction and he's not intending to re-sign (that's about the timeline when he and the management started discussing his future before the last contract)

If he does choose to leave, the big question that'll hang over the era, I think, is how the team never found gave Matthews the prime years of a decent #1 defenseman during his tenure. The record will be their having missed on the two they drafted in the first round, failed to get in on the trades for the few that moved, and failed to convert the young star who walked into one before he did. All they ever had was a low-end #1 who got progressively worse. Some stars go to waste in front of horrible goaltending, but the Leafs did well there, I think, so... some consolation in that.

Although if they were to make it, they'd have to be playing at like a 110-point pace or whatever. They'd be pulling a Florida c. 2023 or whatever.
