Armchair GM Thread 2024-25

I don't get the B. Schenn hype. 33 years old. Has 3 years left on his deal at a $6.5mil AAV. Has had his point pace drop in 4 straight seasons now. And apparently St. Louis wants a "mammoth" return for him. That last point kinda kills any interest for me.

Now if he came with retention and a handful of our secondary trade pieces (Robertson, Niemela, ect) then maybe. But if it's a 1st rounder and full cap hit no thanks.

Also, he doesn't exactly have a history of being a significant producer in the playoffs. If he were a cheap rental, sure, he could be an upgrade for 3rd line C, but, at the acquisition plus ongoing cap concerns, it's a pretty easy pass for me.

It's a Sellers Market out there.... multiple teams competing for limited assets. Limited by the number of teams that are Sellers, given most teams are still close contention, especially in the East.

Colorado must have gotten word of the salary cap increase prior to the public and quickly dealt Rantenen because his numbers, just like perhaps other players in contract years (MM16), are going to be historic player-friendly numbers this summer.

Now it' reporter that Carolina is having difficulty meeting terms with Rantenen.

This means players with term are more valuable in the current trade market than before the cap increase. Leafs will need to give up top prospects and 1st rounds to get quality. Maybe even someone off the bench? So getting term... like we got with McCabe, should be a priority, and definitely will be more expensive now in the market w cap increases. It's not just Schenn (with term on his contract) that will require a Mammoth Return.... probably every player that's not a rental.

Expect to say bye bye to some quality assets beyond draft picks if Leafs can even put together a deal in this market.
