This is the garbage we?re going to have to endure until he signs. If he doesn?t sign an extension the second he?s eligible I think the Canadian sports media conglomerate will collapse in on itself.

Who is this guy? This is the kind of "hot take" you get at the local watering hole from the guy 6 or 7 deep.

Yep, he's the guy at Buffalo Wild Wings watching the game on the big screen, yelling at Nylander so the whole bar car hear, 5 pitchers in with his 2 buddies that tolerate him, and spit-talking about how the 2nd period intermission has never been the same since Don Cherry "left".

He was actually a Leafs scout, got fired, probably bitter.

He has mentioned he was the guy that wanted to keep Pogge over Rask.

Not to beat this dead horse, but man that decision just looked worse and worse over time.

One guy played 7 NHL games, won 1, and the other guy won a Vezina and a Cup along a 13-15 year pretty spectacular NHL career.

It didn?t need time to look worse. It was a terrible trade at the time. I still remember the thread here about it.

The trade set the team back a decade. And the fact that they couldn?t draft at least 1 decent NHL calibre goalie in that entire time span is even more pathetic.

Matthews: I want to be clear about the contract stuff. I?m going to touch on it today and that?s it. I?m focused on the season and we?ll deal with it then. I love playing here, I consider it home now.

I couldn't find the video I saw last night from a fan that shows Ace's elite defensive angling to keep Matthews off the recently groomed mound.

Was at the game.  Matthews kept arguing with the mascot and even when doing the photo with Manoah after the pitch was still going on about throwing off the rubber

I wish I could find the article that I was reading the other day, but it talked about Matthews defensive numbers this year and how he is at the top of the league.  They had this one metric where he was way out in front, and it wasn't even close.

I find if funny that all people want to talk about is that he isn't on pace to score 60 goals, but he is doing his best to play like Bergeron, and no one wants to give him credit for that.

Most people look at pts totals and make decisions based on that alone. Matthews is a much better player this year then last. He keeps getting better and better...found this...

The first is something that?s tracked by SportLogiq, and is something I mentioned on the show earlier this week: defensive plays. That?s a combined stat of exactly what you?d expect: blocked passes, stick checks, block shots, etc.

At five-on-five, Matthews has the top raw total in the NHL by a wide margin. The top-10 is a who?s who of defensive forwards you know, which includes Phillip Danault in second with 197, and Patrice Bergeron in fourth with 190. Matthews' total is a whopping 265.

That's the stat I read.  Thanks for posting it.  He's definitely been a force in the defensive zone this year.

Sometimes I feel that Matthews gets over hyped.  People want to put him in the same category as McDavid, which I feel he isn't.  I remember the Kessel days where fans wanted to build him into something more than he was.  They would try and put him in the same class as Ovechkin or Kane by cherry picking stats to support their case.

Looking at Matthews stats tonight though, you can't really argue with his goal scoring prowess, and maybe I don't give him enough credit when you combine that with his defensive presence.

In 454 games he has 284 goals.  McDavid has 280 goals in 537 games.  Draisaitl has 283 goals in 606 games.

Since Matthews came into the league in 2016 up to around Jan 20th, he's 2nd in GWG, 5 behind McD in 38 less games and 1 ahead of Drai in 43 less games.

Matthews was 64 5v5 goals ahead of Drai,(43 less games), 33 ahead of McD (38 less games), 41 ahead of Ovi (32 less games).

I know that part of TO media is already talking about Matthews leaving for nothing instead of resigning.

But think as a player (as dominant as Matthews is), he has already 500+ points in one of the original six franchise in 6 seasons.

He smashed some of the records already, along with Marner. If they manage to have some decent sucess in the post season they will have the opportunity to break almost every record that is possible for them to do it, If Toronto stays competitive, why would you walk away from this opportunity? (from a player competitive point of view)

If he doesn't extend come July 1st you have to trade him.  Can't be left holding the bag like the Islanders were waiting for Tavares to decide.  Get your boatload of picks and prospects and re-tool/rebuild in this scenario.

So same with Willy then?
