Calling this a trade is really a case of putting lipstick on a pig.
I would expect they must have tried waivers first and got no takers. This is nothing more than giving Bernier away so I can only conclude they were desperate to do so.
As others have said, this was 100% a part of the original Andersen trade. It just wasn't included at that time because of Bernier's signing bonus. Anaheim needed a back-up goalie who could play at least 25-35 games because of Gibson's inexperience and Bernier fills that need very well for them. I think that Anaheim is happy to have him.
Aside from the fact that neither team has announced it as such and going with the prevailing supposition, it is still a gift. At the very least we should have gotten something (normally I would say more but really I means anything) in return.
As announced, the Andersen deal was within the realm of reasonability, still unnecessary (premature) in my opinion but so be it, but this side bar (if indeed it is part of the Andersen transaction) takes the Andersen trade out of that classification, which is to say, we way overpaid.
We are going to stumble along through next season with or without Andersen and with or without Bernier. There is no way this team makes the playoffs short of a miracle so why pay more salary for the same result?
I have not generally been critical of current management but in this instance, I believe they may an error.
