I also don't love that it pushes the clock back in making the right decision on his roster spot. Veterans rarely lose their spot due to injury
I read it as credit that he values his opinion. Keefe is taking advice and utilizing his coaches.Zee said:I see Keefe slyly threw Sanford under the bus for not pulling Samsonov. Basically said Sandford convinced him to keep Sammy in when he wanted to pull him.

L K said:Matthews with 9 goals in 6 games in December. 16 goals in 18 games since the start of November.
Despite 23 goals in 27 games he has two stretches of 1 goal in 7 games and 1 goal in 9 games. He has scored in 12 of 27 games and he has scored 2 or more goals in 8 of those 12 games.

He's on pace for 69 goals and his 5-on-5 goal scoring rate isn't even nearly as good as it can be. In 20/21 when he scored 41 goals in 52 games he lead the league by a considerable margin with a 1.94 5-on-5 G/60 rate. When he hit 60 in 74 in 21/22 he was again at 1.94 G/60 which again led the league by a considerable margin. This season that rate has dropped all the way down to 1.45. If you want to use a cutoff of 300 5-on-5 minutes that puts him 19th in the league. Interestingly former Leafs Trevor Moore, Mikheyev, and Hyman rank 1st, 4th, and 5th in that stat right now which is... bizarre to say the least.
Point is it's crazy to even think about what Matthews' final goal tally could be if his 5-on-5 numbers start to get back to those heights. Hypothetically if he was scoring 5-on-5 goals at a 1.94 / 60 rate this season he'd have 26 goals total in 27 games.

To put in in even more franchise perspective:
5th all time - Auston Matthews - 322 goals (508 GP)
4th all time - Ron Ellis - 332 goals (1034 GP) - 10 goals back
3rd all time - Dave Keon - 365 goals (1062 GP) - 43 goals back
2nd all time - Darryl Sittler - 389 goals (844 GP) - 67 goals back
1st all time - Mats Sundin - 420 goals (981 GP) - 98 goals back
Right now Matthews is on pace to pass Dave Keon (368 goals if he hits 69). That would leave him 52 goals behind Sundin. It is distinctly possible that we could see Matthews be the franchise leader in goals by the end of the 2025 season.

I'm kind of surprised Lagesson is seemingly getting away scott free with this, but at the same time, it's pretty much a carbon copy of the Marchand slewfoot on Liljegren, and he didn't get anything for that either.
