Canadian Olympic orientation camp roster announced

I think I'd lose Marleau and Nash and go with Giroux and St.Louis instead.

Giroux has been on a tear and I really like what St. Louis could bring on the big ice.

Seems like we don't have the depth on defence like we once did. Not to worry, Rielly will be there for 2018.  ;D

As Mirtle points out, no Canadian has more points than Giroux the last 3 seasons.  Don't see why you'd leave him off at all.

He's the new Spezza. Incredibly talented centre who scores a ton and is underrated defensively. Spezza couldn't crack the team in 2010 because of the centres ahead of him. You could say the same about Giroux but like you said he can play wing as well. He really should be on the team.

The four years since the last Olympics:
St. Louis 249GP 90G 271P
Giroux 249GP 78G 176A 254P
Couture 250GP 98G 95A 193P
Thornton 253GP 51G 184A 235P

Kunitz 240GP 94G 105A 199P
Marleau 255GP 103G 106A 209P
Carter 216GP 98G 61A 159P

I figured Thornton would have made the team before Marleau did.

Seabrook being left off while Hamhuis made it is surprising.

Kunitz over Giroux is silly.

St. Louis will always be underappreciated.

They probably preferred Hamhuis because he's better defensively than Seabrook. I guess they felt they already had enough offensive D-men.

I don't think Kunitz should have made it though. Not over Giroux.

There are many rumours that Russians are planning to built as large ice surface as possible to eliminate what happened to them in Vancouver when epsecially Canadians hit them hard along the boards. This Olympics will be about skating, skating and individual finesse given the room available. This may have influenced the selection as well.

My guess is Giroux is first in line for injury replacement.

Also.... it sounds like Yzerman was the guy who called all the guys who did and didn't make the squad this morning. That explains his demeanor in front of the cameras during the selection announcement and preceding interviews. He really appeared out of sorts and shaken up about it.

The international ice surface is 200x100.

Keep in mind, if Stamkos isn't ready to go, that means the next highest RW (Giroux, or maybe, St. Louis) gets taken.

I haven't heard the rumour, but they might be allowed some wiggle room. Pretty sure Salt Lake was played on a rink somewhere between NHL and international size.

For the most part, I think they picked the right group. I love the defense, by far the best in the tournament. Most of the forward picks were good, with exception of Nash and Kunitz.

Leaving off Giroux is nonsense though.

I don't get the Carter pick. Why is everyone seemingly ok with that?
Am I missing something or is he that good out in LA?

Carter was a solid pick. Big, fast, highly skilled, and one of the top right wingers that Canada had to choose from.

Good group. I'm not surprised by odd choices for 8th defenseman or 3rd goalie as I can't imagine those are easy sells vs. 2 weeks of vacation. I might have leaned slightly more towards veterans from '10 but there was no way Canada wasn't going to be the favourites so it's just nitpicking.

Leaving the guys behind that they did and taking Chris Kunitz?

I mean come on, that is pathetic, anyone who tries to justify it is deluding themselves.

Cause all 4 of them are better and higher skilled goal scorers

You realize Joe Thornton only has 5 goals in 43 games this year, right? And hasn't scored 30 in 10 years?

Carter has easily got the best goal scoring record of the 4.

He seems to score big goals.

Over Giroux, Seguin, Hall or Thornton?

Of those, only the first two would have been fighting for the same position.
