Sure, they could have changed up who it was with the puck but there's no guarantee it would have worked out any differently. On a 5 on 3, teams will take away stuff down low and force you to beat them from the point. It's what the Leafs did to the Caps the game before when Shattenkirk kept missing the net.
So if "Reasonably well executed but not quite as adaptive as I'd like" qualifies as "pathetic" to you, well, I said I'm not debating adjectives.
