Carl Gunnarsson

I am a big fan of Gunnar but I think this was a slight overpayment for him.  I had him pegged in the 2.5 range.  After Franson is signed this will make for a very expensive d- core.

When you look up and down this roster and realize that they will be maxed out at the cap, you have to think that some guys are getting majorly overpaid.  This team will be in a dog fight to even make the playoffs and is no where close to a team like Chicago who will have a similar payroll.

Maybe, but since we're making comparisons with Chicago, Gunnar reminds me a little of Hjalmersson ... kind of under the radar but pretty darn solid.  I'll take a guy like that at the price they got Gunnar for.

I've carped a bit on Nonis this summer but I vote this as a solid deal.

I like Gunnar to and think this is an OK deal the following 2 years if he
keeps improving.

Unfortunately it's the prior deals Nonis has overpaid on that are causing the problems.

From having the 2nd largest Cap space to being either over or against it is bad management.

Not sure what he has planned but Liles is the logical target.

There's a plan, we will be under the cap by opening day and I doubt we would have given away any valuable assets for nothing to get there.

In the same way Crosby is overpaid because he's only scored 40+ goals once in his career?  :o

I just think that in a time when the cap is shrunk you should get a trickle down effect with the UFA and RFA signings.  We really haven't seen that at all which means that there are going to be a lot of good players looking for jobs thanks to their agents and a lot of Trevor Smith's playing in the NHL.

Good deal, just makes things a little bit tight with $6.5M left.

reading article earlier that leafs how a bit more salary cap room as holzer, Brennan and Smith are included in the cap however if they are demoted to the AHL since their salaries are < 900K their salaries wont count against the cap.  So the Leafs have almost $8.5M left to sign Kadri, Franson and Fraser which I believe is possbile to sgin all three

Really not the case since as it stands Brennan and Smith become the 7th dman and 13th forward if for no other reason other than their limited salary cap hit.  Which due to such an intense cap crunch could block guys like Ashton, D'Amigo or Holzer out.  The only guy that could supplant say Smith would be Broll but he clearly isn't ready.  We are in cap hell unless Liles or Franson are moved, there is no other way to slice it.

From a cap perspective, I can't see them carrying both 7th DEF and an extra forward, IMO they will carry 7th DEF.  But that would mean McLaren playing every day  :(.

I'm hoping there is a market for Liles.

And he sux defensively b/c he doesn't throw big hits either..

::)

I could see Franson asking for 4 million per season. The scarier thing is thinking of what kind of money Gardiner will be commanding next season if he stays healthy and is given a chance to play like he was in the playoffs. He could argue easy for 4+ per season based on the inflated pay of his fellow blueliners.

And he's leading the team in giveaways.  >:(  And is tied with Leivo, Colton Orr, and Trevor Smith in takeaways.  :-\ And is providing Paul Ranger-type offense.  :P
