Dreger reporting the Leafs have interest in Adam Oates as an assistant Coach. Waiting to see if he lands a head coaching job elsewhere first.

Grabbo and Kulemin sign with the Leafs, T-5...

Oates would be good to work on the powerplay. Then they need someone as a defensive specialist who can help out with break-outs, PK and faceoffs.

John Tortorella?  Perhaps as an assistant coach his psycho tendencies can be restrained.

He could unleash his fury against Carlyle in one of his post-game pc's...

Caps fans seemed to have a Carlyle-like hate for Oates, so I'm not actually sure how I'd feel about that. But if we're keeping Randy I guess we could go for full-on suck mode.

The more I heard about what Oates was like in WAS, the less and less I like the idea of him coming here.

From what I've read he was great for their PP but not much else - although I think their entire PP consisted of "pass to Ovechkin in the same spot every time" so not sure I'd give him TOO much credit there either.  Even I'd probably keep doing that.

He was the guy who started the whole 1-3-1 PP set-up back in New Jersey with Kovalchuk.

Gilmore has been coaching for some time now, so how about we bring him on board.

He actually hasn't been. He moved in to management.

Well thats to bad, I think he would have been a positive influence on the bench

Maybe, but his coaching record was pretty poor. He seems much better suited for a management type role.

Making the hard decisions like trading his own son!

MLHS took a look at 3 of the potential names in the Leafs search for assistant coaches:

Based on that, Ramsay and Pearn look to be choices. I'd bypass Tocchet, but that's me.

I'm really not crazy about any of them. Pearn would be my choice if I had to pick one, but I'd like the other one or two that we bring in to be more up-and-coming guys, not just coaches that have been recycled around the league over the past decade or longer.

I don't disagree with what you propose, but Ramsay's record seems pretty good in all area's. With Shannahan, I bet we see more experience vs. up and coming guys entering the fray. He seems intent on augmenting the team with experience, at least that's how he talks.

I wonder if there is a fit with Bylsma? I know there are head coaching positions available in Vancouver, Carolina, and Florida, but perhaps he sees it as a possibility for a head coaching position in a big market in a year or two.
