He's also been pretty vocal about making the playoffs this year. And it's not like Carter is old or past his peak or anything. That's an injection of 30+ goals a season over the next 3-4 seasons - it's not like the Leafs don't need another top 6 forward badly. Again I understand that Gardiner looks like a great prospect...if I'm a Leaf fan I'd take Carter over Gardiner. Your blueline is loaded with bodies / $ anyways and a top 6 guy like Carter just doesn't come around too often. Maybe he's got his sights set on Nash or now Brown?
Sure, but, when you have an excess of something, you don't start moving pieces from the top, and, Gardiner has been one of the team's best defencemen this season, especially over the past 6 weeks or so. Besides, offence is hardly the Leafs' biggest need. What they need in their top 6 is a big, physical forward, and Jeff Carter is only one of those things (and it's not physical). Carter isn't the right fit for the Leafs, and Burke valued him as such, and that, rightfully, included not being willing to move Gardiner for him.
