Cell Phones

RIM is on the path of Nortel.

It certainly appears that way. I read an article a little while back that showed an awful lot of parallels between them and Palm, shortly before they bottomed out and were bought out by HP. This set of new devices and the new OS is quite possibly their last chance at life on their own.

That will make some interesting times here in K/W should RIM go under. There have been a lot of new tech start ups happening and have cushioned the blow of cutbacks in BB land. Would not be enough if RIM were to go under though.

My work forces us to go with the Blackberry phones due to 'security' reasons, though they have started testing the Iphones and it may be an option in the future.

My daughter recently picked up the Samsung Galaxy III...What a great phone that one is.

Still on a Blackberry as well.  Don't really care about phone functions right now other than having Twitter, and most of my close friends back home use BBM, so it suits me fine.

I've got iPhone 4, my wife has the Galaxy S3, I have phone envy.

I still have a blackberry, mostly for bbm, I don't do too much besides check this site, twitter, email and bbm, so it works for me quite well. If the lost bbm, I'd probably switch over after my contract was up though.

A few points from me:

We have a landline. My wife insists - she prefers to have it there in case of emergencies even though we both have cell phones.

I currently have a personal cell (Motorola Krazor or however you spell it). It is a pretty bad phone, but since it isn't a smart phone it probably won't enter into Rick's consideration, which is good. :)

My work phone is an iPhone 3GS. I think I was one of the last people in my company to get one before the iPhone 4 came out. Can't really help there - it is okay, but it really lags sometimes.

As for the poor reception in your house, I had the same issues with Rogers when I lived in a basement apartment in Toronto. I tried everything, including some of those signal boosters, but nothing worked - I had to go outside to take calls, even in the winter.  That was a few years ago though, so I would hope that technology has improved considerably.

Anyone with rogers having issues with their phone? My girlfriend has rogers service and apparently can't receive calls unless they come from someone else with Rogers. She called them last night and was told there were issues in the west but not east of there, seems like its moving east.

A suggestion for those dealing with reception issues in your home or basement.. get the WIFI calling feature, which allows calls to be routed through your wireless internet (assuming you have this too) and it solves the problem.  At our old home, my wife's studio was in the basement where she got zero signal ... we added this to the phone plan and the phone worked great from there on in.

Apple Iphone 5 comes out on Sept 21.

pre ordering it for the brat Sept 14.

Funny. I think I'll be pre-ordering it for myself that same day.

LOL... funniest thing is, kid has a job now, and just had his birthday for which he got quite a bit of money. Both my daughter and my husband are into gadgets and it's hilarious to me that the little guy (and by little I just mean the youngest, he's 17) is going to be the first one who's going to get the new one this time around :-) . He's in school that day, but Mommy will preorder for him.....and he'll be paying me back :D

meh. It seems like smartphones have reached a little bit of a plateau in technology.

Slightly faster, slightly thinner, slightly bigger screen.

Won't stop people from lining up around the block to be first to get one though.

The black one looks pretty slick. The white one, not so much.

The engineering that goes into those phones is pretty cool.

And yet while they refined lots of aspects of the previous model, nothing about this phone is groundbreaking. The Lumia, while a much less refined phone, had some pretty new unseen features added (remote charging amongst others).

Also read that Samsung (and possibly Nokia) were prepared to sue Apple if the IPhone 5 included LTE technology (Nokia and Samsung own the majority of the patents). Well it does, and after Apple's suit against Samsung, it's only a matter of time (possibly weeks) before a major suit is brought against them, with Samsung seeking large dollars and restrictions against sales of the IPhone 5.

Things are getting interesting, that's for sure.

On a separate note, I'm still content with my IPhone 3GS. Not sure what will eventually make me get a new phone. Maybe when Apple finally allows Flash and I can watch Leaf games on my phone. A man can dream...

I'm not sure that case would get very far. There are dozens of companies that claim they hold "essential patents" for LTE technology, so, Samsung and Nokia would be in an uphill battle to start with, even before taking on Apple. If they were serious, they'd likely be looking at a case that could last for years and cost them each a lot of money, without really inflicting much, if any, pain on Apple. There's too much grey area there.

That's really on Adobe to create a suitably secure version of Flash, and, since large portions of the internet seem to be gravitating away from using Flash, that's unlikely.

Agreed. There really isn't much to write home about unless you want integration with other Apple products. Nevermind that the screen is still a ton smaller in surface area compared to the S3. I used to have the 3GS but I felt Apple's philosophy was too much based on marketing and popularity after the iPhone 4 came out, they've been releasing nearly the same product for the last 2-3 years. And interestingly enough, it seems iOS has stolen the notification feature of Android. Time to sue!

Adobe actually pulled their flash player from the Google store last month, so even future Androids won't have that capability. I think it's safe to say flash is dead in mobile phones.

I've watched Leaf games in the past with the Leafs TV Interactive Mobile app.

No flash needed.
