"no one" haha.

Cox or Simmons said basically the exact same thing a couple of weeks ago too.

Don't I remember a collective groan when they signed Clarkson?

I think opinion was sort of divided, like anything else. I didn't like the term/cost but Clarkson was billed for a long time as being sort of the perfect 3rd line player so I didn't hate the idea that they signed him right away.

I think the split was between those that thought he might do some good for too much money vs the group that thought he'd do nothing good for too much money. I suppose I could go read some old threads, but I'm too mind-boggled right now for that.

Here's the Clarkson signing thread, for those who are interested:

Uh, that's embarrassing.  :-[

Looks like a lot if us had high hopes, if only because we had to have them.

I mean, even like a conditional 7th where the condition was like "If Clarkson scores 30 goals at any point during the contract".

It wouldn't surprise me if somehow the NHL finds a way to fine the leafs for this.

I was thinking about this too. They were pretty po'ed when we essentially bought a pick from Tampa for taking an injured Olaf Kolzig, and he had an expiring contract. Then we got dinged for some funny business regarding the Frogren contract, but a lot of people thought the NHL had that trade in mind when the punishment came down.

But Columbus approached the Leafs so maybe it's ok?

How about 30 goals over the remainder of his contract.

So, I just regained consciousness after hearing about this. It's real, right? It's not some sort of weird fever dream or concussion related hallucination? Clarkson was really moved without the Leafs having to take on anything that significantly impacts them in any way other than real dollars? That's . . . I just . . . wow.

Don't push it, Shanahan to Nonis.

No, I'm just kind of thinking out loud. Would that have really derailed this trade? If so, why? It would be a condition that would only be met if people had already said that Columbus made a great trade. So is it that reporting it as Horton for Clarkson and a Conditional Pick would even give the illusion that Toronto had made out like bandits? Considering that there seems to be real incentive from both sides to make this deal would such a tiny added factor really throw it off the rails?

Either way, I'm not seriously suggesting it, just wondering.

This was one of my first thoughts too.

Question is though, why would the NHL office approve this if that's the case? It's not like they are blindsided by a deal like this when it has to pass through them.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to wake up tomorrow morning to find out this was all just a crazy, wonderful dream.

I, too, had high hopes that Clarkson would help the team and was excited when the Leafs signed him back then.  Of oourse, no one was expecting a monstrous contract, but then, if that's what it took to sign an asset, then why not, what harm could that do...blah, blah,blah...

....well, what a disappointment Clarkson turned out to be, as disappointing as befit that monstrous contract.  Even Nonis believed & had faith in Clarkson as he stated.  What an awful mistake!

Good luck to Clarkson in Columbus where they can use some of his grit and where he can obviously provide some sort of veteran leadership.

i dont need to analyze the trade a bit. All I know is DC is gone and so is that albatros contract... No shot Horton ever plays. Huge win

I feel bad for Clarkson. I know how much it meant to him to succeed in Toronto, but I think that exact same pressure probably contributed to his terrible performance with the team.  I guess I'm glad he didn't have to squirm on the hook any longer.

I hope he does better with some more structure, and away from all the attention and expectations. He's set a pretty damn low bar for himself, and I'm confident he can improve, at least a little, with a fresh start.  Good luck to him.

Sure, and it's an interesting question.  I'd like to see them mic a gm for a trade deadline one day.

It's morning, is he really gone ?  :o

I won't rest easy until he actually plays a game for Columbus.  Too much risk of him falling down repeatedly on the way to Columbus and somehow getting the trade nullified.
