Colborne recalled

I wonder if it wouldn't make sense to sign a veteran depth centre to provide the right 3rd/4th line depty (Dominic Moore?). I just don't think Colborne can do it if someone gets hurt.

I'm pretty sure Dom Moore won't play this year.

I hear Tim Connolly is available.

This whole debate on fighting should not even be the issue.
It is the stupid instigator rule that should be at debate. Because of that rule is the reason the whole era of staged fights has developed.

Anyhoo....

I watched a little closely for Colborne last night.

With some confidence, this kid could develop into something. I don't think he's a 1st liner..but he's got a big body and some definite talent.

I think Carlyle is doing the right thing, just bringing him along slowly, no pressure. Just get his feet wet and used to playing the game at this level. If he plays well on the 4th line, he'll work his way up to 3rd, especially the way Grabo is playing (or not playing). But no rush is smart. He may not be getting as much ice time right now, but he'll learn to adjust to the pace and also being just being at the top level environment in terms of key games and practicing with the top club and players.

Agreed. I think the same can be said for Gardiner. Just a guess really, but Carlyle may think he was a little rushed into NHl action last season, and wants to bring him into the game at a slower pace.

The progress of Joe Colborne will be very interesting to watch this year. Here is hoping he gets out of the gate with a strong training camp under his belt.
The fact that the Leafs only re-upped him for a year suggests its time for him to fish or they cut-bait.
In my mind, given the Leafs have dumped Grabo and traded Frattin, Colborne only fit would really be a third-liner, since the top two lines are pretty much a lock, and putting him on a fourth line makes no sense for a young prospect.
That raises the question, do they play Colborne or Bolland on the wing, assuming Colborne earns a spot out of camp (but who knows who else might surprise). So would it better to go...
Colborne, Bolland, Kuli
or
Kuli, Colborne, Bolland
I'm guessing the former, since Bolland was brought in to be a shutdown guy. But shifting Colborne to a wing just seems a little strange too. A bit of a conundrum unless some kind of deal takes or Colborne flops out of camp. But he will be an interesting guy to watch - though most of the media attention will be around Clarkson, Bolland and Bernier.

It's interesting because with the departure of quite a few forwards, Colborne moved pretty far up the depth charts this summer.

I'm not sure either how they'll use Colborne. Has he played much wing? Some centers don't translate well to playing wing.

The 3rd line is a possibility, but I was thinking they might put McClement there at LW with Bolland and Kulemin.

Colborne's opening spot might be at 4th line C, but I agree with you that this season will probably decide his fate with the organization.

I think Colborne will have to show enough in camp to make 3rd line or he'll probably get moved in a package for a genuine 3rd liner. Sticking him out there with Orr and McLaren will do nothing for his progress, that is just not the right fit or enough time for a young player of his type.
