Decisions, decisions

While I wouldn't exactly hate that contract, I feel like in this landscape we can probably get him signed to less even with term. He's a guy that produces virtually 0 offence, and he's not the typical rugged stay-at-home player. He's also likely to slot into our bottom pairing when we start to look at playoffs, so $3mil there just seems higher than what you'd like to budget for that spot.

So yeah that type of deal does make sense I just think we could do it for even a little less, like $8mil over 4 years. I bet even Marincin probably doesn't realize how valuable he can be.

I think the thing there though is that when negotiating a long-ish term deal with a younger player you probably have to allow for some potential for growth. So while Marincin right now is probably no more than a 2 million dollar player on an open market in three to four years time he might be.

I also think it would be relatively risk free. Yeah, 3 million dollars is probably more than you'd ideally spend on a bottom pairing guy you're also not likely to reach a point where the gap there would have a negative impact on the team for the duration of the deal. Marner and Matthews haven't played in the league yet and the Leafs aren't likely to be at/near the cap until those guys have rich second contracts. So at worst you might have one year where Marincin isn't a great fit and you'd ideally like to free up the space and you'd have to think it'd be a movable deal at that point.

It's a minor thing to be talking about, I realize, I just can't help but think that with the front office shakeups we're seeing in Phoenix in Florida and the like that players like Marincin and their solid advanced numbers/not as impressive point totals may not come as cheaply in the future.

What I know about analytics you could stick in your thimble but what I like about Marincin is his Kaberlelike calmness with the puck. You don't always see that with a young guy.

Also I like having a bunch of MM initials on the team: Martin, Mitch, maybe Milan, and, soon, Mauston.

Hmm, I was thinking slightly longer term deals (3 yrs), but I see how cheaper and shorter show-me deals would keep the internal competition flowing, and the cap space allotted more to the top, than the bottom of the roster.

I like Carrick though, and puck-moving RHD are pretty rare. I hope both he and Zaitsev turn out to be top-4 guys in the long run.

I hope Zaitsev can adjust easily to the smaller ice.  Then, I hope he can turn out to be a top 4 D.

At this point, Carrick is a reliable 5 or 6 D.  We'll see if he can move himself into the top 4.

Too soon to really say, but, if even two of Nylander, Marner, and Matthews turn out as their current performances suggest they should, I think that's a pretty solid plan.

I wouldn't leave Connor Brown out of this discussion. He has an amazing work ethic, and great IQ. He's outperformed Nylander so far in the Calder Cup playoffs. I think he flies under the radar in terms of Leafs top prospects.

I'll wait to see if his AHL performance somewhat carries over to the NHL before I anoint him as a top prospect.

I know its a small sample size... but 6 pts in 7 games with the Leafs this year.  And he definitely didn't look out of place.  Out of all our prospects, him and Hyman are probably the most ready for the NHL and I'll be surprised if both aren't on the roster at the start of the year.

Pretty darned good!  Hope he can be this consistent going forward.

I wonder what happens with Peter Holland. For the most part I've always liked him as a cheap bottom-6er but I keep forgetting that he exists when it comes to next season.

I like the idea of him on the wing, actually. He's got speed and size and a modicum of skill at a pretty cheap price right now. He needs skill on his line though, as he's not a production carrier himself.

Ya I like Holland as well, Caledon boy?however I think he needs to add some grit to his game?a little Kadri sandpaper might spring him loose more often

He's already been pushed out of the center role by Babcock.  He's been healthy scratched numerous times by Babcock. I'd say players like Brown, Sosh and Hyman might have very well pushed him off the Leafs roster.

It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if he's traded.

Love the banner.  And I completely agree, he's the priority out of the RFA's.
