Evander Kane re-signs with SJ [7 years, $7mil AAV]

You're probably right, though I can't really tell what kosher avenue they have for knowing that. Tavares did have two years of a modified NTC (8 team list)...

The same avenue by which contracts used to get done at 12:01 or whenever on Free Agent day. I don't think anything is gained by pretending that teams won't have informal talks with agents pre-when they're allowed to.

Haha, yeah that's the one.

The guys a dirtbag for sure, but am I missing something else with a lot of the negativity thrown at this signing?

He?s one of the better ES scorers since 15/16 averaging 32 per year and is still in his mid twenties.

I totally understand the injury and behavioral concerns however.

As a percentage of the cap he?s likely under 10% next season and could reasonably be expected to bet 30 again on a better team.

Also consider how many guys have signed 5.5-6.6 million dollar deals over that time, I think this is a good signing for the Sharks.

We haven't mentioned his off-ice issues in this thread. And I don't think this thread has been altogether negative about the signing either...

My question was more about blocking off cap flexibility so early with Tavares potentially available to them.

Has the signing been panned elsewhere?

Yeah, I?d guess 9 out of 10 people I follow on hockey twitter criticized the signing.

Well, I think the thing to remember around this time of year is that the difference between a signing people are fine with and a signing people will call the worst signing ever can often be the difference of about 1-2 million and 1 or 2 years. Even a deal like Clarkson's, if it had been 5/20, probably wouldn't have gotten too many hackles raised.

I agree with you that Kane compares well with some of the wingers who've gotten those 5/30 or 6/32.5 sorts of deals but when you factor in the injury concerns and his legal issues it is still a lot of money and time to tie to a guy with genuine question marks.

This contract is nuts. SJ is completely nuts. Kane is a cancer to the team. Not a team player. Off ice issues. Dressing room issues. I'm not sure I have seen a worse contract.

Do you have a short memory? How about either of Clarkson or Finger?  Kane contract might be high but at least he can play.

True those are indeed worse. However at the time they were signed they probably looked much better. You can't predict an injury. However we can predict Evander Kane's shenanigans.

When Finger's contract was signed it looked so bad people assumed our GM had mistakenly signed the wrong player.

28 goals once, career high of 43 points.  Nine seasons into his career so you can't really make a huge argument that he's still learning the game, yeah, makes a lot of sense.

By signing him, SJ also has to give Buffalo their first round pick instead of a second.  This is a real bone headed move IMO.

He did score 30 goals, 57 points in 2011/12.

Fine there have been worse contracts.  But this one is really bad IMO.

You never know...Sometimes it takes longer for people to grow up.It might work out if he can produce and keep himself around the right people. It,s not like good power forwards grow on trees.

I'd take Kane and contract over Okposo and contract. Or Oshie, or JVR and his new contract, and so on.

And 29 goals, 54 points this year. I don't like the contract, but L K doesn't have the right numbers, that's for sure.

Would you guys sign Nylander to the same contract?  Just curious, I would, but you're betting on improvement from Nylander too.

Yes, easily. Nylander was 60 pts pretty much off the hop, and it's all of his prime years.

This is San Jose signing a 50ish pt player (albeit on garbage teams) for 7x7 with only maybe 2-3 years of prime to bear fruit and maybe outplay his cap hit.
