Federal Election 2019

What I found particularly interesting was that Ryerson had a Conservatives club, who needed a safe space to figure out how to debate liberals, the "dumbest people" at school.

Leaving aside the actual meat and potatoes here, it's in poor taste for anyone to be using the issue of residential schools to score points, it's really bizarre to me that the leader of one of Canada's major political parties thinks teaching students how to epically DESTROY other students is a worthwhile use of his time.

Anyone know where to watch tonight's debate with english translation?

I watched it even though I don't speak french very well. (I might have picked up 10% of what was being said.)

I have to say, O'Toole has clearly been taking speaking/presentation classes.

Were they doing anything anyway? Love how everything is the feds' fault, everytime.

About to start back with school with the potential that we could end up seeing setbacks COVID-wise and his anti-vaxx supporters being mad at him....good stuff to prorogue.  I wish I could just decide I don't feel like working for a month.

Three male bodies arrive at the morgue with big smiles frozen on their lifeless faces.
The coroner calls the detective to ask what happened to the men.

"First body: Frenchman. Age 60. Died of Congestive Heart Failure while making love to his mistress. Hence the enormous smile, said the detective."

"Second body: Scottish. Age 25. Won one thousand dollars on the slot machines and spent it all on Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky.  Died of acute alcohol poisoning. Hence going out with a smile."

The Coroner asked, "What about the third body, it?s badly burned but he still has a smile on his face?"

"Ah," said the detective, "This is the most unusual one:  Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada.  Age 45.  He was struck by lightning."

"Why is he smiling then?" asked the Coroner.

"He thought someone was taking his picture!!"

I come here for Canadian news since I don't really follow anymore, as I moved away long long ago. But I've a passing interest, as some family's there.

I see a December 2020 post about the residential schools and Canadian racism... then a September 2021 one about watching the debate. For the upcoming election.

I gather it's a snap election, initiated by Trudeau himself... but I haven't heard a good explanation of why. Is there an argument to the voters that X is why they're voting now? More specifically: what are the Liberals not able to get done in a minority government coalition with the NDP that they need a majority to do?

Trudeau is taking heat for calling an election in the middle of the pandemic, and rightfully so.  He had enough support on most important things, especially from the NDP, to be able to govern reasonably effectively.

I think the Liberals' popularity was waning, and O'Toole (Conservative leader) wasn't poling well, so they saw this a their best shot at getting a majority.

It's looking like a minority government at this point, and is even tipping a little minority Conservative.

I think the polling may have shown that voters would give him a mandate, and showed opposition parties as weak, but as Bruce Anderson pointed out, people say a lot of things when the stakes are low and hypothetical. I don't think polling predicted the amount of traction that there'd be for Canadians not wanting an election until covid was solved more readily.

(It remains funny that the 2019 election thread is being used for this election.)

Gotta give them at least 18 months to figure out they're in a dysfunctional parliament, again. Spring 2023 for the next one is my prediction.

Agreed. I didn't think it necessary to start a new thread.  :-X

Still not sure who I'm voting for.
