Flames @ Leafs - Jan. 23rd, 7:30pm - TSN4, Fan 590

Also pretty hilarious how the refs decided not to call that a fight just so they wouldn't have to call the instigator on Giordano. What a great rule.

I'm really not seeing as much head contact on that hit as Ray does. Seems pretty late to me though.

It looks later that it was on the replays, because of how much they slow things down. The contact itself was clean - on a taller player, we're not even talking about it. He did come a long way to make the hit, so a charging penalty could conceivably been issued there, but, he was gliding into the hit and didn't leave his feet, so . . .

EDIT:

JeffVeillette: Here's a closeup of the other angle, for those wondering if there was a leap or anything. It honestly looks clean, just unfortunate. http://pic.twitter.com/KPXREyaC73

Pretty clearly not late.

Don't understand this league. Why don't they just eliminate contact period. Ray you're an idiot and I agree with you totally Damian quit admiring the pass Johnny. Just stood there. Maybe expect to get hit.

Busta I disagree he was right there when Gaudreau made the pass maybe a second later so don't see how you can call charging.

Charging isn't about the lateness of the hit. It's about the distance traveled and/or player leaving their feet. Komarov came from the corner on a beeline to make that hit. Could easily have been charging.

42.1 Charging - A minor or major penalty shall be imposed on a player or goalkeeper who skates or jumps into, or charges an opponent in any manner.

Charging shall mean that the actions of a player or goalkeeper who, as a result of distance traveled, shall violently check an opponent in any manner. A "charge" may be the result of a check into the boards, into the goal frame or in open ice.

Well here's hoping the Flames don't start taking runs at people in the 3rd. It seemed to be heading towards that after the hit.

I thought it was a clean hit, unfortunate consequences for Gaudreau and a great teaching moment for any youth coaches in the GTA who can tell all their players watching tonight to do the opposite of what Gaudreau just did, he spent a silly amount of time looking at his pass.

He didn't travel more than 10 feet after the pass was made. It wasn't late and he didn't go out of his way to make the hit. Nobody on the panel seen a penalty there. If I did I would say it. Problem with this league is anytime there is a clean hit players drop gloves. I understand it was Gaudreau and Giordano stood up for his star player but it's getting ridiculous. Seen it a couple other times on the weak calls against Bozak and Nylander and the little slash on Versteeg. These players couldn't have cut it in the old days.

Agree wholeheartedly.

How far he traveled after the pass isn't the issue. It's how far he traveled in total, and it was well more than 10 feet. It was from the goal line to above the face-off circle. Also, the fact that he didn't go out of his way to make the hit doesn't change things, either. He traveled a significant distance to deliver a violent hit. That checks all the boxes necessary to justify a charging penalty. The refs decided not to assess one, and that's their decision, but it absolutely qualified for one.

So what do you want Komarov to do in that situation. Oh I better slow down here Gaudreau has the puck or maybe I should just skate by him and ignore him. He skated towards Gaudreau who had the puck and after he passes it Komarov hits him. It's hockey. Plus I agree it looks worse because he's a small player.
