Morals of this game.
- Every forward not on the Matthews line + Kadri needs to be bolted to the defensive zone.
- Polak, Bozak is are bad
- Andersen needs to learn how to not take 20 games to get his game going
- Babcock's irrational dislike of Leivo is perplexing

Mostly agreed. There's more rot there.

Look at that, Leafs have possession, make a clean line change and Zaitsev is forced to fire it half the sheet of ice to come close to making a pass.

Turnover.

Pathetic.

It's crazy how often the defence need to pass the puck through the entire defensive end in order to reach a forward. Just nuts.

Yup. I was lucky enough to be at the rink tonight and this is what I noticed. Tons of long passes to covered skaters standing still. It felt like Carlyle was coaching.

Borgman needs to play with a guy more reliable than Polak.

Honestly, I think Borgman needs to go down to the A for more seasoning. He's got potential, but he's still a little raw.

Yeah, maybe. Playing with Polak certainly isn't helping his development.

Folks, it's bad defense AND bad goaltending.  BOTH.  And when you have both, you get scored on a lot, which is exactly what we've seen.

Edit: Frank beat me to it.

The thing is, Andersen has a bit of a history of struggling at the beginning of the season. I'm confident he'll get his game together. The team's defence? That I'm not so sure about, as it has a lot more moving parts and needs a greater number of players to get on board.
Although the defence stinks, Freddie is not square and a guy who is 6'4" shouldn't be on his knees for ever shot. Most of the goals that have been scored in the last two games have been snipes over his shoulders. My point is if he had been standing up, these shots would have hit him in his chest and shoulder areas, thus no goals.

Yea he definitely seems to be lacking confidence or something; he was flopping around and looking confused all game and was on his knees before all three of those wrist shots were taken. I wouldn't mind seeing Pickard getting some work and sharing the load for a bit.

This is going to end up going one of two ways.  One, Andersen shows the form that he showed after a shaky start last year, and starts playing extremely well for a couple of months which allows the team to get their defensive side of the game sorted out, or two, he ends up not getting it back at all which means the questions of why the Leafs committed this much money and term to a goalie will start to come up.

We're all 100% convinced that Leivo is sitting on Monday, right?

The team is 1-2 with Polak in the line-up. Pretty damning evidence against him.

Also, regardless of all the talk that Babs wanted him back to help out the PK, he's played a whopping 1:02 total PK in those games - all of it last night.

We can blame Polak all we want, but if you goalie cant stop a goal with his glove hand we arent going to win anything. Note this is why we got rid of |Reimer!

Reimer has a .912 save percentage.

Also, the team didn't "get rid" of Reimer for any reason other than they felt they needed a fresh start in net and San Jose was willing to give the Leafs something for him.

Some people love to put the blame almost exclusively on the goaltender. The truth is, even with the best goalie in the world in net, if the Leafs keep making awful decisions in the defensive zone and continue to allow high danger chances at the rate they currently are, it won't matter. In order to have real success, the team needs to be able to win without having to rely on their goaltending to cover up their mistakes on anywhere near this frequent a basis. Andersen gave up a bad goal last night, sure, but, if Polak had read the play better, that shot doesn't happen. That's where the focus needs to be - preventing chances/not creating chances for the other team. Until the team starts doing that, focusing on the goaltending will just leave the team stuck being not good enough. Address the defensive issues, then worry about the goaltending. Not the other way around.

So the question I have is "Why can't this team play defence?"  Is it personnel?  Is it the coach?  Was the team reading to many of their press clippings?

I get the team has some young players.  The thing is, it's not the young players that are having the problem.  It's the older ones.  Also, other than the Matthews line, they look like they are skating in mud.  Marner hasn't been the same this year, and that Bozak/JVR combo is horrible if there own end.

Yeah, I mean I get that they're young, but I don't remember them getting shredded every night last year, then again their record was a lot worse at this time last year. Oh well they still have a decent record and it's a long season. Hopefully they adjust their defensive strategy and have the players make better reads/decisions.
