I thought the Leafs played well...I'm not sure what people want with players dropping like flies.

yeah ..I agree...i know injuries aren't an excuse per se ..but the leafs aren't the strongest team in the league to begin with ...down reimer ...armstrong .grabovski ..mcarthur  ..and whoever didn't make it out of this one ...it's hard to generate offense with those kind of guys out...i'm frustrated...but i'm not sure it would exactly be fair that this is the leafs

Oh yeah add to my list

Play "the best game of the season"....score 1 goal because the other team has competent goaltending...other team gets 1 goal on their 1st shot

Thats what I'm saying. We outshoot the opponent almost 2-1 and we're down 4-1. I mean, I know the offense has to get going, but it starts with goaltending that keeps you in tight games. It could've been 1-1 the whole way, even with just our one regulation goal.

But does that even mean anything in a practical sense? The Leafs are playing their two back-up goalies and the reality may be that their two back-up goalies aren't very good.

I, like a lot of other people, said the team's fortunes were directly tied to Reimer this year. Reimer's hurt and the team is struggling in his absence. What's there to get worked up over then? Is it unfortunate that Gus and Scrivens can't snap their fingers and be better goalies? Sure, but the point remains that there's no easy fix to the team's goaltending woes.

Depending on how the games end up tonight, the Leafs PP is now ranked 12th in the league.

;)

In all the doom and gloom, it's gone unnoticed, but the special teams have been much better of late.

This is really the sane way to look at it.  Now, the Coxes of the world are already beginning to take shots at Burke for going with Reimer and Gus, but for once I agreed with Burke on that, and I still do.  If Reimer is not coming back for months and months, then sure, go out and get another goalie.  Otherwise, play Gus and/or Scrivens and/or Rynnas until he gets back.  If those guys can play .500 the team will be hanging around for a playoff spot, and that's all anyone could have reasonably expected of them at the start of the season.

I agree I'm not in panic mode though. They keep playing like tonight and wins will come.

No, I know, and I agree with you. It's just that lately I've been hearing apologists for goaltending, when it's clearly an issue in addition to offensive struggle. Some attribute poor goaltending to bad defense and bad systems, but I personally think it's crazy not to think terrible goaltenders will be exposed unless you have an all-star calibre team (Osgood circa 2008). Not really much of that in this thread, though.

But goaltending is an issue only in the sense that they're not getting very good goaltending right now. I know that seems like a strange statement but it's not, for instance, the same as the defense where you can say "The defensemen aren't very good, the team needs to add a top flight defender". The Leafs have, in Reimer, a guy they think is a good #1. While he's out the team legitimately has to gut through it because going out and acquiring a #1 goalie isn't realistic or even all that smart because, again, Reimer's coming back.

Lombardi left the building with his left arm in a sling.

That's what you like to read.  :'(

At least it wasn't his head in a sling.

First game I've missed this year, sounds like they played well but ran into some good goaltending? Also sounds like our goaltending wasn't much to write home about?

Fire Wilson already how many years of the same tune

It has to be saved for the right moment. Fire Wilson when the team appears poised to be on an uphill trajectory, not when their starter and 4 of their top 9 are out.

If you fire him tomorrow morning, they're still not gonna do much better without said injured players. Then the negativity gets shifted towards the next coach and he's next on the chopping block.

?That might be the best game we?ve played all season,? Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson said. ?To be honest with you, start to finish, their goalie came up huge.

For sure, you want to go from Tom Watt to Pat Burns or Mike Murphy to Pat Quinn, not the other way around...

...kidding but really, what tune is that, lots of injuries and pretty good game ( going off the thread ) against a good goalie and decent defensive squad or just a loss and it's all Wilsons fault?

Why does the baby from The Change Up come to mind here?...

At least we have our own first round pick this time... Tank Nation 2.0?

We're not even below .500!

Gettin' there...

So is every team that lost tonight.

You must be under the mistaken impression that I care about every other team that lost tonight.

This slide started long before everybody started getting injured. It just provides a convenient excuse now.

The once lauded "depth" of this team has been tested and it is failing miserably. They've got 7 defensemen who can't defend, a scoring line that can't score, and a mish-mash of players filling out the bottom two lines, only 2 or 3 of which are useful.

How long did you think Kessel and Lupul could carry this team on their backs? The team is being exposed for what they are.

ok, so the leafs have scored 8 goals in the last 6 games during the regular time...and allowed 25

In all honesty, and because I'm sick of arguing over the same thing every single day, do you get any enjoyment whatsoever out of watching the Leafs?  Based on your postings here, it's hard to imagine you do.  Not a value judgment, but an honest query.

You know I enjoy watching the Leafs. I just absolutely HATE the fact that they suck and I don't feel I'm doing myself any favours by trying to hide behind excuses or trying desperately to find reasons why they are actually a great team that is having inexplicable problems.

There hasn't been much good to say about the Leafs in the past 6 years. This is my place to vent. I'm truly sorry if that offends you.
