Game 41: Detroit Red Wings vs Toronto Maple Leafs W4-3

Leafs taking fewer penalties than normal is a good trend. Nice interview with Jonas there too.

Yup. He said all the right things and seemed genuine about it. Combine that with his solid play of late and I'm really going to miss him when he's back in Sweden next year.

Wow - Leafs win, Pens lose, and we jump ahead of them. The East is officially tight...

Yeah. Leafs in 7th. Washington in 10th and starting to turn things around. However, there are a couple teams ahead of the Leafs I think are due for a slump. The Devils are tied for the 5th least ROWs in the league and have relied fairly heavily on success in the shootout to get where they are right now, and Ottawa has a goal differential of -10. I think both of their records are better than they deserve so far. Pittsburgh is struggling since Crosby went down again, and now, they may have lost Staal long-term as well.

Florida may drop from 3rd to right out of the playoffs....

Yeah. They're falling back to earth, and it makes Washington a little less of a threat to knock the Leafs out of a spot, since they likely pass Florida first.

Wow. Held on by the skin of our teeth but it's a win!

I'd really like to know if detroit is just THAT much better than us, if it was the coaching decisions on how we were playing in the 2nd/3rd or just the team as a whole that couldn't figure out how to get outta our zone with the forecheck pressure the Wings were putting on us.

Oh, I think they are.  Their puck control game is incredible.

Still, for us not to let that one slip away is very big.  A 3-0 to start a long home stand, the home stand that will make or break the season, is huge.

Sure they dominated us in puck control, but I think the Leafs still had the best of the scoring chances all game.  Detroit threw everything at the net, but Gus played sound positionally and was able to make the stops.

On the other hand, Detroit gave up a whole lot of great chances to us - 3 of the 4 goals were VERY good chances, the other was a blatant giveaway up the middle on a PP.  Then there were at least 2 other 2 on 1 chances where he had to make side to side great saves.

Yes Detroit played their usual great puck possession game - but let's not sell the Leafs short for getting their chances within it and burying them.

Oh, I'm not -- the Leafs deserved that 3-goal lead.  They used their speed to goad the Wings into all kinds of turnovers.  But when the Wings get that cycle going -- it's like the puck just goes from stick to stick to stick like it's hitting velcro.  And they get traffic in front of the net like nobody else, even w/o Holmstrom.  Very formidable.

Sorry, I just used your post to key off that. ;)

Any way Kessel can get an assist on the Lupul winning goal?  He needs another point in the scoring race.  ;)
I feel like someone deserves an assist on the Kessel penalty shot goal.  I didn't see who it was, but there wouldn't have been a play, nor a penalty to call, were it not for that pass.  Doesn't make sense that they don't credit them, when you think about it.

Anyway, that was a thriller.  I can hardly believe that they pulled that one off!  pnjunction is right on the money: discipline has been the key in their last 3 games.  Their mood just seems to be more positive, too; more talking and smiles on the bench between plays.  Lupul especially seems to be having a ball out there, and he played one hell of a game.

Also, they're doing a much, much better job of blocking shots, instead of just screening the goalie.  20 blocked shots tonight, and nothing in on the screen.

.923 SV% since he took the job back from Scrivens on November 19th (10 starts and 11 appearances).  8-3-0 over that stretch.

Those are some damn solid #1 goalie type numbers there. Hope he can maintain that level.

Can somebody summarize in a sentence or 2 what Gus said in his postgame interview?  My stream ended as soon as the game was over.

I had that very same thought.  I forgot who sprung him, but he ought to get a Delayed Assist.

I haven't seen the interview but you can get all the interviews for all games at the leafs official website.  It is great:

When you take into account that the Leafs are the youngest team in the league and the Red Wings are the oldest, this was a character win.

What was also unbelievable was the stat shown that the Leafs also have the youngest defense in the league, by a large margin. Average age 23.8 tonight, and next youngest defense was the Rangers at something between 25.0 and 25.9.

The average age of our D corps is 25.4 years. It drops slightly to 25 years if you include Keith Aulie, although he is not a regular at this point. The average age of the D corps that played this game was 24.6 years. Whoever calculated that stat must have thought Gardiner was playing instead of Komisarek, in which case it would have been 23.3 years.

Still, the point is made. They are young.

I couldn't find the particular interview there or anywhere on the Leafs site, too bad.
