even though ..it was hardly miller that was the problem for them tonight..if you goalie only gives up two goals you should have a pretty decent shot at winning

Even though it's not really fair to Miller it's a well-done cartoon.

Not tonight, no, but a big part of the reason Buffalo has been so disappointing is that Miller has looked very human this season. GAA of 3.01 and a Sv% of .902 is not good enough for a starting goalie - especially for a team without a lot of offensive depth.

Nice win.  Though the Leafs didn't threaten the Sabres net a whole lot during the second half of the game, the Sabres weren't able to get much going themselves.  Dion, in particular, has settled down again after a bad stretch, which seems to have had a stabilizing effect on the team as a whole.

Then, of course, there's Gus, who's looked imperturbable for a long while now.  The one glaring weakness I saw in his game before was his tendency to get riled after getting scored on, but there really hasn't been much evidence of that lately.  I think he's earned the starting role for the foreseeable future (though whether Ron sees it that way is a different matter).

I take responsibility for Miller's poor play, the curse of goalies I draft in fantasy leagues sucking is going strong for a 5th year.

I also have Vokoun.

Wasn't able to watch it live, just finished watching it now.  That was some surprisingly pro-Leafs reffing out there (and the last few games), what a turn around from a week or so ago.

Great to win and put some more distance between us and Buffalo.

The management must have complained to the league after the Winnipeg game where the crowd was making the calls.

I often wonder how much influence the GM would have by complaining behind the scenes about certain games.  It seemed for a long stretch the Leafs were getting very chintzy calls against for a number of games.  Not sure if it's just evened out for the Leafs now or if there was any behind the scenes formal complaining.

Our starting goalies have had far worse numbers this year and for the past couple of years.  Those are the numbers of a good starting goalie not an elite starting goalie.

They're both near the bottom of the league for qualified goalies. They are not good starting goalie numbers at all. Only 4 goalies that have started at least 25 games have a worse GAA and only 5 have a worse Sv%.

Saw only the first 15 mins of the game (DD had a freakin 9pm game and she got hurt, hit from behind, other girl got 2 freakin mins).  Anyhoo, my oldest said that it was a great game and glad to see the Monster with another SO and solid effort from the whole team.

Gustavsson's definitely making me eat my words about him from earlier in the season, and I couldn't be happier about it.

But the thing is he actually looks like a different goalie out there. He's generally not flopping around like he used to, he's in position more, he doesn't overplay or fight the puck. It's very strange to see his form as it is just so damned good lately!

The thing is Gustavsson has to maintain this for the long haul now.  We've seen spurts from him in the past where he's been solid for a number of starts only to drop off later for whatever reason.  I recall at one point he had won 7 consecutive decisions for the Leafs.  If he keeps this level of play up for the remainder of the season we can all become believers.

I believe a lot of this is that the team is playing better in front of him. I'm not taking anything away from Goose, because he was certainly playing better than Reimer has, but his defense and especially the forwards are paying much more attention to their defensive assignments from what I've seen in the last 5 games for sure.

As far as before 5 games ago, I think it's as simple as him getting his confidence back.

yes..it's just that "for whatever reason" tended to be heart surgery...

Gus won 7 straight starts in March 2010 and then lost his next 3 to end that season. He started 2011 badly and never got into a groove until he was sidelined by heart procedure #3 in Feb 2011.

and you don't think that before he ended up going in for surgery that he was dealing with symptoms?  ..i think there's a rather big cushion on both sides of something like that ...before you go into surgery you're dealing with every once in a while your heart going out of whack ..which in most people tends to cause high amounts of anxiety ..the natural reaction would be to not push yourself ...but that's hard to do when you're a professional athlete ...and then when you come back from said operation you still have it in the back of your mind that it might not be fixed...which jonas has some experience with ......

it seems like people underestimate how much something being wrong with your heart can screw with your head ..i'm not saying that's the only factor..but i tend to think it's a rather big one ...that along with learning the different ice size ..playing for a team that's been pretty awful for the last few years..especially defensively and having a rather short leash to work with

I could be wrong..but i think if Jonas' health holds out we'll continue to see an upward trend in his performance.
